What Is a VLM?

VLMs are enclosed automated storage solutions. They have two racks stacked vertically, with a placement and retrieval feature that moves between them. This feature responds to commands by retrieving the tray stored within the VLM that an operator needs. The Modula VLM and others have become popular in warehouses because they increase the accuracy and efficiency of retrieving products. 

How Is It Different Than Vertical Carousels?

Vertical carousels have a series of shelves that rotate in an elliptical motion. A track system, like a Ferris wheel, and a motor, like a plane, drive these shelves. Meanwhile, only the required tray is moved when items are retrieved in a VLM. Therefore, the main difference is that a vertical carousel will move all the shelves when you want to retrieve an object, while a VLM will only move the one you need. 

How Is It Different Than Horizontal Carousels?

Horizontal carousels are similar to vertical ones but move in an oval horizontally. Therefore, everything you have stored in this solution will move when you need to retrieve one item. Meanwhile, the VLM only moves the desired product when you need it. That means only one tray is moving at a time. 

What Are the Different Configurations of VLMs?

VLMs come in various types, each with unique features, specs, and capabilities. For example, you can look for single or multiple columns, single or dual elevators, double-deep stacking, high-speed placement and retrieval or pallet storage. Here are the most common types to help you decide what configuration might be best for your business:

How Do They Work?

They have an elevator that runs vertically between two stacks of shelves. One row is at the front of the module, while the other is at the back. The elevator gets a command from an operator and retrieves the desired product. Typically, there is a station about waist-high where these trays are placed.
