There are many different reasons to move to Michigan. You can find out more by checking out our informative guide right here.

While cities like New York and Los Angeles are great, they’re also some of the most expensive places in the country. This means that many people who move there find themselves unable to fully enjoy themselves.

Luckily, the United States has many other great and affordable places, like Michigan. The Great Lakes State is the 5th most affordable place in the country, making it easier than most places to get by.

But aside from affordability, what else does it have to offer?

Keep reading to learn about 7 reasons why you should consider making a move to Michigan.

1. Fantastic Universities

Whether you have children or are looking to attend college yourself, you’ll find Michigan to be one of the best places in the country to further your education. The state has many great public and private schools that you can attend.

From public universities like the University of Michigan and Michigan State to private institutions like Adrian College, you’ll find no shortage of well-respected schools to attend.

If you’re worried about the costs of attending school, understand that living in Michigan gives you access to cheaper tuition costs than out of state residents. This allows you to attend top-tier universities for much less than you would otherwise need to pay.

2. Lake Life

With a name like ‘the Great Lakes State’, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Michigan has a lot of lakes.

Aside from touching four out of the five Great Lakes, you can also find many other small to medium-sized lakes in the state.

Having all of this water access means that the number of activities you can do is nearly endless. From fishing and boating in the summer, to ice-fishing and ice-skating in the winter, Michigan is a great place to explore the outdoors.

3. Beaches Galore

Of course, another one of the greatest parts about having so many bodies of water is that they provide the state with lots of great beaches.

Along the shores of the Great Lakes and some of the smaller bodies of water, you’ll come across picturesque sandy beaches. It might not be the Bahamas, but you’ll still get to go beachcombing, swim in the summer, and watch the sunset.

If you’re interested in researching some of the different beaches, Sleeping Bear Point Beach is one of the prettiest. Twelve Mile Beach and Belle Isle are also lovely.

4. A Stable Job Market

As mentioned, Michigan is one of the most affordable places to live in the country. Aside from low housing costs, Michigan also has a stable job market.

The 2008 financial crisis hit the state hard, as has COVID-19. However, Detroit continues to offer a number of jobs across different fields for its residents. Some of the most popular industries in the region include transportation, health, and finance.

Tourism also provides the state economy with a boost, as well as jobs for people who work in the tourism industry. Over a hundred million people visit the state each year, adding billions to the state GDP.

5. A Diverse Housing Market

As with all things Michigan, the housing market is also diverse. This means that you’ll be able to find the perfect home for you and your family, regardless of your needs, income, and background.

The state features a lot of homes constructed in the mid-20th century. However, you can also find a plethora of new and modern homes built by people enjoying the cheap cost of living in the state. Many of these homes would cost much more outside of Michigan.

If you’re a first time home buyer, make sure that you do your research beforehand. Michigan is a large state, so you want to make sure that you choose the right spot to call home.

6. Farmers’ Markets Everywhere

If you’re used to living in a mega-city, the idea of eating fresh-grown food might sound foreign. However, Michigan allows you to do that, even in metropolises like Detroit.

Regardless of where you reside in the state, farm country is never too far away. This means that you always have plenty of seasonal and year-round farmers’ markets to choose from.

If you end up moving to Detroit, you can visit Eastern Market, as well as the Royal Oak Farmer’s Market. Seasonal markets are also in places like Troy and Birmingham, ensuring that fresh-grown food is never too far away.

7. A Legendary Craft Beer Scene

If you enjoy drinking craft beers, you might be surprised to learn that Michigan has a famous craft beer scene. Many national brands have breweries in the Great Lakes State.

Grand Rapids has a famous Beer City Ale Trail with stops at more than 40 different distilleries, meaderies, and breweries. The city is also the home of Founders Brewing Company.

Detroit has a similar number of options and craft beer varieties. It’s the home of respected brands like Brew Detroit and Eastern Market Brewing Company. Outside of the major cities, you’ll still find a number of great spots to enjoy some of the top craft beers.
