Normally, I am not a fan of anthology films--they remind me of shows like "Ghost Story" from my earlier years; however, "Trick 'r Treat" is the exception to the rule as it is tightly written and well directed with some excellent cinematography that raises it above most horror films. In this collection, Dylan Baker is Principal Wilkins, a school official with a dark secret. In one of the many highlights of the film, he offs a student (the fat kid from "Bad Santa") with a little rat poison in a candy bar trick. His neighbor, Brian Cox (the original Hannibal the Cannibal in "Manhunter") is being harassed by a spooky kid named Sam wearing a burlap sack to great effect. The white-hot Anna Paquin ("True Blood") here plays a young lady (?) costumed as Little Red Riding Hood who has her own issues with wolves. In my favorite story from the film, four teens go to a rock quarry to raise the spirits of some students who were killed twenty years before in a gruesome bus accident...but only for a joke. Ahh, here is where you learn that pranks aren't always funny!

As a horror film, the movie has its moments where you do indeed get a few chills that run up your spine but it also has scenes with a delicious dark blend of comedy and horror that make you wonder if you are sane if you laugh at the misfortune of others! Honestly, I loved this film. The only reason I couldn't give it a four star rating is that it is too short and the stories would have benefited from a few extra minutes of screen time. Visually, it is gorgeous and the music, by Douglas Pipes, is every bit as lush as the best works of Danny Elfman. The stories are all neatly tied together and each carries a healthy dose of surprise. Not your average Halloween movie, "Trick 'r Treat" never dares to be as suspenseful as the original "Halloween" nor is it as bloody as, say, the "Friday the 13th" films. The stories have more twists than a country road and that is a major part of the fun in this collection. For home viewers, the movie is presented in both Widescreen and Full Frame with a terrific Dolby audio experience. I would be willing to go so far as to say that this is one of my favorite scary movies in the last ten years and only because it is so intelligently written, directed and acted. I think it will be one of your favorites, also. Own it on Blu-Ray, DVD, On Demand or Digital Download on October 6th. And if you are lucky enough to have Blu-Ray, this would be a great film to see the immense quality of the cinematography. For a clip, go to http:trickrtreat-movie.warnerbros.com/
