Who didn't love Donna Reed? Along with Jane Wyatt and Barbara Billingsley, she was one of the trio of beloved television mothers from the 1950's. In this, its second season, Miss Reed once again shines as Donna Stone, former nurse and loyal volunteer for all things worthy who raises her two children to respect what's right and wrong and is the devoted wife to husband Alex. She is the Wonder Woman of the golden ages of TV! Miss Reed won an Oscar for her against-type portrayal of a prostitute in "From Here to Eternity" (photos of which are included in this bonus features of the DVD collection) and she couldn't be more different as the star of her own television show. Sweeter than pure cane sugar and more American than apple pie, the Stone family was a realistic family in a time when the Atomic age was all too real for most Americans who were raised on the goodness of sitting in front of the radio listening to "Fibber McGee and Molly". This beautiful DVD presentation is presented in full screen with only minimal white specks that sometimes dot the introductions to the episodes but do not appear in most of the episodes themselves. The black and white is crisp and clear and the sound, while modestly presented in 2 channel stereo, is still good enough that there is no distortion. Special guests in this season include mega-star Esther Williams as Donna's old best friend who is now a globe trotting designer and also the Los Angeles Rams football team. Howard McNear (Floyd the barber from "The Andy Griffith Show") and Kathleen Freeman also get some screen time as neighbors of the Stones'. Bonus features are plentiful and include the original Screen Gems biographies for teen heart-throb Paul Petersen (now the owner of A Minor Consideration, an organization for child actors) and Shelley Fabares (now married to ex-M*A*S*H star Mike Farrell). Sadly, Miss Reed and Mister Betz have both passed on but they live on forever in this resplendant collection. If you are hankering for a taste of the good old days when families sat and ate dinner together and children didn't appear on "Maury" saying that they hate their parents, this is the DVD to show to your kids to remind them of what being a family is really about. |
