    Listed chronologically by release date.

    Airport 1979 - The Concorde (USA 1979)
    Director: David Lowell Rich
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 14.98
    MPAA Rating: PG
Alain Delon (Capt. Paul Metrand), Susan Blakely (Maggie Whelan), Robert Wagner (Dr. Kevin Harrison), Sylvia Kristel (Isabelle), George Kennedy (Joe Patroni), Eddie Albert (Eli Sands), Bibi Andersson (Francine), Charo (Margarita), John Davidson (Robert Palmer), Andrea Marcovicci (Alicia Rogov), Martha Raye (Loretta),

Awful "all-star" disaster movie style entry in the Airport movie cycle. George Kennedy gets my favourite worst line of dialogue in any movie ever. Kristel is decorative and the excellent supporting cast try hard. More proof that the the poor Concorde jet liner was jinxed from the get go.

    Bug (USA 1975)
    Director: Jeannot Szwarc
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 14.99
    MPAA Rating: PG
Bradford Dillman (James Parmiter), Joanna Miles (Carrie Parmiter), Richard Gilliland (Gerald Metbaum), Alan Fudge (Mark Ross), Jesse Vint (Tom Tacker), Patty McCormack (Sylvia Ross),

If the creepy crawlies weren't bad enough, the ones on display here have pyromaniac qualities too. Ludicrous, but 70s eco-horror.

Dawn of the Dead (USA 1978)
    Director: George A. Romero
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 49.98
    MPAA Rating: R
David Emge (Stephen), Ken Foree (Peter), Scott H. Reiniger (Roger), Gaylen Ross (Francine), David Crawford (Dr Foster), David Early (Mr Berman), Christine Forrest (tv producer), Joseph Pilato (Officer at Police Dock), Tom Savini (Biker), Howard Smith (TV Commentator), George A. Romero (tv director),

Uber super-duper awesome 4 disc set, loaded with multiple versions of George A. Romero's ultimate zombie gore-fest (but it is intelligent too!). My pick for one of the top five horror films of all time. Order now, or they will find you and eat you.

Dial M for Murder (USA 1954)
    Director: Alfred Hitchcock
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 19.96
    MPAA Rating: PG
Ray Milland (Tony Wendice), Grace Kelly (Margot Wendice), Robert Cummings (Mark Halliday), John Williams (Chief Insp. Hubbard), Anthony Dawson (Captain Swan/Lesgate), Patrick Allen (Pearson), Jack Cunningham (Bobby), Guy Doleman (Detective),

Near perfect Hitchcock thriller as devious Milland tries to dispatch inconvenient wife, Kelly.

    Eddie Murphy Raw (USA 1987)
    Director: Robert Townsend
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 14.99
    MPAA Rating: R
    Eddie Murphy (), Tatyana M. Ali (), Samuel L. Jackson (),

Kinda strange seeing Eddie as he used to be, as foul mouthed fast talking replacement for Richard Pryor, before he became a kind of modern Fred McMurray/Dean Jones. Very funny concert performance.

    Funhouse (USA 1981)
    Director: Tobe Hooper
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 14.98
    MPAA Rating: R
Elizabeth Berridge (Amy), Shawn Carson (Joey Harper), Jeanne Austin (Mrs. Harper), Jack McDermott (Mr. Harper), Cooper Huckabee (Buzz), Largo Woodruff (Liz), Miles Chapin (Richie), David Carson (Geek), Sonia Zomina (Bag Lady), Ralph Marino (Truck Driver), Kevin Conway (Barker),

Typical 80's horror fare as a mixed bag of teens frequent a ghost train after hours. Hooper's direction makes this one rise above the competition, cleverly making the funhouse unscary then VERY scary for the finale.

    Ghost Story (USA 1981)
    Director: John Irvin
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 14.98
    MPAA Rating: R
Fred Astaire (Ricky Hawthorne), Melvyn Douglas (Dr. John Jaffrey), Douglas Fairbanks (Edward Wanderley), John Houseman (Sears James), Craig Wasson (Don/David Wanderly), Patricia Neal (Mrs. Stella Hawthorne), Alice Krige (Eva/Alma), Jacqueline Brookes (Molly), Miguel Fernandes (Gregory Bate), Lance Holcomb (Fenny Bate), Mark Chamberlin (Young John Jaffrey),

Disappointing viewing in 1981, this is a film I've upgraded over the years as there are so few good ghost stories on celluloid. The excellent cast of veteran ghost story tellers are somewhat offset by a weaker youthful cast. Dick Smith's creepy ghostly manifestations don't quite pop out at you when they'd be scariest, but still a classy movie.

    Jersey Girl (USA 2004)
    Director: Kevin Smith
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 29.99
    MPAA Rating: PG13
Raquel Castro (Gertie Trinke), Ben Affleck (Ollie Trinke), Jennifer Schwalbach (Susan), Jennifer Lopez (Gertrude Steiney), George Carlin (Bart Trinke), Stephen Root (Greenie), Mike Starr (Block), S. Epatha Merkerson (Doctor#1),

Easily eclipsed by the real life failed romance of its stars, here's a chance to watch the thing without as much baggage. Clumsy but still endearing romance film.

    Ladykillers (USA 2004)
    Director: Joel Coen
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 29.99
    MPAA Rating: R
Tom Hanks (Professor G.H. Dorr), Irma P. Hall (Marva Munson), Marlon Wayans (Gawain MacSam), J. K. Simmons (Garth Pancake), Tzi Ma (The General), Ryan Hurst (Lump Hudson), Diane Delano (Mountain Girl), George Wallace (Sheriff Wyner),

One of those films you have to be in the right frame of mind for - like many Coen Brothers films in fact. Hanks in a love it or hate it performance.Excellently quirky remake of the British comedy classic. R rating seems a little harsh considering what passes for PG-13 these days.

    Mask (USA 1985)
    Director: Peter Bogdanovich
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 19.98
    MPAA Rating: PG13
Cher (Rusty Dennis), Sam Elliott (Gar), Eric Stoltz (Rocky Dennis), Estelle Getty (Evelyn), Richard Dysart (Abe), Laura Dern (Diana), Todd Allen (Canuck), Dennis Burkley (Dozer), Harry Carey (Red), Nick Cassavetes (T.J.), Wayne Grace (Drug Dealer),

Uplifting tale of deformed teen, Stoltz, saved from TV movie sentiment by sterling performances from Cher and Sam Elliott.

Murder on the Orient Express (UK 1974)
    Director: Sidney Lumet
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
Albert Finney (Hercule Poirot), Lauren Bacall (Mrs. Hubbard), Martin Balsam (Blanchi), Ingrid Bergman (Greta Ohlsson), Jacqueline Bisset (Countess Andrenyi), Jean-Pierre Cassel (Pierre Paul Michel), Sean Connery (Colonel Arbuthnot), John Gielgud (Beddoes), Wendy Hiller (Princess Dragomiroff), Anthony Perkins (Hector McQueen), Vanessa Redgrave (Mary Debenham),

The very best of the all star Agatha Christie whodunnit adaptations. Finney is OK as the Belgian sleuth. Best of all is the big budget decadence that recreates the story with such atmosphere you feel like you might really be there.

    Never Cry Wolf (USA 1983)
    Director: Carroll Ballard
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 19.99
    MPAA Rating: PG
Charles Martin Smith (Farley Mowat/Tyler), Brian Dennehy (Rosie), Zachary Ittimangnaq (Ootek), Samson Jorah (Mike),

Perfect adaptation of Farley Mowat's autobiographical tale of a scientist studying wolves. Atypical Disney fare is one of the best offerings the studio produced in the 80s. Highly recommended.

    Pink Flamingos (USA 1972)
    Director: John Waters
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 14.98
    MPAA Rating: UR
Divine (Divine/Babs Johnson), David Lochary (Raymond Marble), Mary Vivian Pearce (Cotton), Mink Stole (Connie Marble),

The ultimate (occasionally literally) bad taste anti-everything movie still remains in a league of its own despite competition from American Pie, Van Wilder and Freddy Got Fingered, which all look like wholesome family entertainment by comparison.

    Sentinel (USA 1977)
    Director: Michael Winner
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 14.98
    MPAA Rating: R
Chris Sarandon (Michael Lerman), Christina Raines (Alison Parker), Martin Balsam (Professor Ruzinsky), John Carradine (Father Halliran), Jose Ferrer (robed figure), Ava Gardner (Miss Logan), Arthur Kennedy (Father Francino), Burgess Meredith (Charles Chazen), Sylvia Miles (Gerde), Deborah Raffin (Jennifer), Eli Wallach (Detective Gatz),

A seventies horror that time has been kind to, again mostly because the competition has been awful. Michael Winner is no Dario Argento, but he manages to shock and gross out the audience with this tale of the house built on the gateway to the unspeakable. Gruesome make-up effects from Dick Smith.

Star Trek: TNG 1: Generations (USA 1995)
    Director: David Carson
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 19.99
    MPAA Rating: PG
Patrick Stewart (Capt. Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Cmdr. William Riker), Brent Spiner (Lt. Cmdr. Data), LeVar Burton (Lt. Cmdr. Geordi LaForge), Michael Dorn (Lt. Cmdr. Worf), Gates McFadden (Cmdr. Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Cmdr. Deanna Troi), Malcolm McDowell (Dr. Tollan Soran), James Doohan (Capt. Montgomery Scott), Walter Koenig (Cmdr. Pavel Chekov), William Shatner (Capt. James T. Kirk),

Clunky attempt to pass the baton between Trek franchises doesn't give anyone enough to do. I'm amazed that anyone will ever give Picard full insurance coverage on a star ship after this one.

Whispers in the Dark (USA 1992)
    Director: Andrew Bergman
    Release Date: 09/07/2004
    Price: 14.99
    MPAA Rating: R
Annabella Sciorra (Ann Hecker), Jamey Sheridan (Doug), Anthony LaPaglia (Morgenstern), Jill Clayburgh (Sarah Green), John Leguizamo (Johnny C.), Deborah Unger (Eve Abergray), Anthony Heald (Paul), Alan Alda (Leo Green), Jacqueline Brookes (Lorraine McDowell), Art Malik (Earring Vendor), Harsh Nayyar (busboy),

No great shakes, but one of those films that seemed better than you expected when you picked it up off the video shelf. The performances save it, especially the always underrated Sciorra.

    Orca (USA 1977)
    Director: Michael Anderson
    Release Date: 09/14/2004
Richard Harris (Captain Nolan), Charlotte Rampling (Rachel Bedford), Will Sampson (Umilak), Bo Derek (Annie), Keenan Wynn (Novak), Robert Carradine (Ken), Scott Walker (Swain), Peter Hooten (Paul),

Shameless Jaws rip off, with revenging rampaging Killer Whale on the loose. The bit (or bite) with Bo Derek is a gem. Beautifully Awful.

Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (USA 2004)
    Director: Raja Gosnell
    Release Date: 09/14/2004
    Price: 17.95
Freddie Prinze (Fred), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Daphne), Matthew Lillard (Shaggy), Linda Cardellini (Velma), Seth Green (Patrick), Peter Boyle (Old Man Wilkes), Tim Blake Nelson (Jacobo), Alicia Silverstone (Heather), Neil Fanning (Voice: Scooby Doo),

Second innings for the Scooby gang. Guilty pleasure time, these awful films remain somehow enjoyable. Wish they'd increase the number of ex-Buffy the Vampire slayer cast members and replace Freddie Prinze with Marc Blucas though.

    THX 1138 (USA 1971)
    Director: George Lucas
    Release Date: 09/14/2004
    Price: 26.99
    MPAA Rating: R
Robert Duvall (THX-1138), Donald Pleasence (SEN), Don Pedro Colley (), Maggie McOmie (LUH), Ian Wolfe (), Sid Haig (), Marshall Efron (), John Pearce (), Johnny Weissmuller (), Robert Feero (), Irene Forrest (),

George Lucas's best film? 1984 gets a George Lucas workover. Brilliant low budget sci-fi. The charming and lethal chrome robot cops are wonderful. Lucas has supposedly enhanced the special effects for the DVD release. (PS what an awful cover).

    Watermelon Man (USA 1970)
    Director: Melvin Van Peebles
    Release Date: 09/14/2004
    Price: 24.96
    MPAA Rating: R
Godfrey Cambridge (Jeff Gerber), Estelle Parsons (Alfia Gerber), Howard Caine (Townsend), D'Urville Martin (bus driver), Mantan Moreland (counterman), Kay Kimberly (Erica), Kay E. Kuter (Dr. Wainwright), Scott Garrett (Burton Gerber), Erin Moran (Janice Gerber), Irving Selbst (Johnson), Emil Sitka (delivery man),

Comedy of racial issues. Cambridge plays a white man who suddenly finds himslef black one morning, much to the horror of his wife. I can't imagine that this has dated well. Very funny and astute then...how far have we come I wonder?

Star Wars 4: A New Hope (USA 1977)
    Director: George Lucas
    Release Date: 09/21/2004
Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin), Alec Guinness (Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi), Anthony Daniels (C3PO), Kenny Baker (R2D2), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), David Prowse (Darth Vader), James Earl Jones (Voice Darth Vader), Phil Brown (Uncle Owen Lars),

Bloody amazing! Finally on DVD. This is the "tinkered with version". Whatever else you may think, Lucas definitely put new life into the cinema in 1977.

Star Wars 5: Empire Strikes Back (USA 1981)
    Director: Irvin Kershner
    Release Date: 09/21/2004
Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Anthony Daniels (C3PO), David Prowse (Darth Vader), James Earl Jones (voice Darth Vader), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Kenny Baker (R2D2), Frank Oz (Yoda), Alec Guinness (Ben Kenobi),

The best of the sequels, this dark follow up has many splendid moments.

Star Wars 6: Return of the Jedi (USA 1983)
    Director: Richard Marquand
    Release Date: 09/21/2004
Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Sebastian Shaw (Anakin Skywalker), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor), Frank Oz (Yoda), James Earl Jones (Vader's Voice), David Prowse (Darth Vader),

Disappointing final installment with an overabundance of singing cute furry creatures.

    Alamo (USA 2004)
    Director: John Lee Hancock
    Release Date: 09/28/2004
    Price: 29.99
    MPAA Rating: PG13
Dennis Quaid (Sam Houston), Billy Bob Thornton (Davy Crockett), Jason Patric (Jim Bowie), Patrick Wilson (William Travis), Emilio Echevarria (Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana), Jordi Molla (Juan Seguin), Leon Rippy (Sgt. William Ward), Tom Davidson (Colonel Green Jameson), Marc Blucas (James Bonham),

Not as bad as feared version of the classic tale of a small bad of patriots attempting to hold onto a small fortification against overwhelming odds. Lacks the requisite oomph somehow, needs to be grittier - I blame the PG-13 certificate myself.

    Backbeat (UK 1994)
    Director: Iain Softley
    Release Date: 09/28/2004
    Price: 19.98
    MPAA Rating: R
Stephen Dorff (Stuart Sutcliffe), Ian Hart (John Lennon), Gary Bakewell (Paul McCartney), Chris O'Neill (George Harrison), Sheryl Lee (Astrid Kirchherr), Scot Williams (Pete Best), Paul Humpeletz (Bruno), Wolf Kahler (Bert Kaempfert), Gertan Klauber (Pimp), Albert Welling (Doctor), Finola Geraghty (Model),

Excellent telling of tale of the early fab four who were actually the fab five at that point in time. Story focuses on the ill-fated Stu Sutcliffe. Good recreation captures the energy and sound of a phenomena in the making.

Bernard and the Genie (UK 1991)
    Director: Paul Welland
    Release Date: 09/28/2004
    Price: 24.99
    MPAA Rating: NR
Rowan Atkinson (Pinkworth), Alan Cumming (Bernard Bottle), Bob Geldof (Himself), Lenny Henry (Josephus - the Genie), Denis Lill (Frank Kepple),

Oddly charming christmas story from the UK featuring Rowan Atkinson and Lenny Henry, the latter woefully unknown on this side of the Atlantic. Written by Four Weddings and a Funeral scribe Richard curtis. Recommended.

    Christine (USA 1983)
    Director: John Carpenter
    Release Date: 09/28/2004
    Price: 24.95
Keith Gordon (Arnie), John Stockwell (Dennis), Alexandra Paul (Leigh), Robert Prosky (Garage owner), Harry Dean Stanton (Junkins), Christine Belford (Regina Cunningham), Roberts Blossom (LeBay), William Ostrander (Buddy), David Spielberg (Mr. Casey), Malcolm Danare (Moochie), Steven Tash (Rich),

Stylish, but very silly might be the way to sum up Carpenter's take on Stephen King's possessed Plymouth Fury movie. Awesome soundtrack as Christine's radio blares out appropriate tunes. Special Edition re-release with commentary by Carpenter & Keith Gordon.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (USA 2004)
    Director: Michael Gondry
    Release Date: 09/28/2004
Jim Carrey (Joel Barish), Kate Winslet (Clementine Kruczynski), Gerry Robert Byrne (Train Conductor), Elijah Wood (Patrick), Thomas Jay Ryan (Frank), Mark Ruffalo (Stan), Jane Adams (Carrie), David Cross (Rob), Kirsten Dunst (Mary), Tom Wilkinson (Dr. Howard Mierzwiak),

Ever tried to get that certain someone OUT of your mind forever? You have to admire it for being clever, and Winslet is outstanding. Truly amazing bits of imagery.

    Tess (UK 1979)
    Director: Roman Polanski
    Release Date: 09/28/2004
    Price: 24.95
John Barrett (Old dairy band), John Bett (Felix Clare), Tom Chadbon (Cuthbert Clare), Sylvia Coleridge (Mrs. d'Urberville), Caroline Embling (Retty), Peter Firth (Angel Clare), Suzanna Hamilton (Izz), Nastassja Kinski (Tess), Leigh Lawson (Alec d'Urberville), Rosemary Martin (Mrs. Durbeyfield), Carolyn Pickles (Marian),

Leisurely and extraordinarilly beautiful. Polanski's shot at filming Thomas Hardy's novel. Nasstasja Kinski glows from the screen...
