No, I don't think I will kiss you, although you need kissing, badly. That's what's wrong with you. You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how. ~ Rhett Butler (Gone with the Wind)

    Agnes of God (USA 1985)
    Director: Norman Jewison
    Price: 14.95
    MPAA Rating: PG-13
Jane Fonda (Doctor Martha Livingston), Anne Bancroft (Mother Miriam Ruth), Meg Tilly (Sister Agnes), Anne Pitoniak (Dr. Livingston's Mother), Winston Rekert (Detective Langevin), Gratien Gelinas (Father Martineau), Gabriel Arcand (Monsignor), Norma Dell'Agnese (Sister Genevieve), Janine Fluet (Sister Marguerite),

Great drama of a psychiatrist, Fonda, investigating the death of a baby involving a naive nun. Terrific performances by Fonda, Bancroft and Tilly.

Ali G Indahouse (UK USA Germany France 2002)
    Director: Mark Mylod
    Price: 27.98
    MPAA Rating: R
Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G), Michael Gambon (Prime Minister), Charles Dance (David Carlton), Kellie Bright (Julie), Martin Freeman (Ricky C), Rhona Mitra (Kate Hedges), Barbara New (Nan), Emilio Rivera (Rico), Gina La Piana (Hoochie), Dana Pauley (Hoochie), Dominic Delesilva (young boy),

Ali G gets a movie. Since the Ali G character generally functions in the real world, ie baiting celebrities from his own show, the concept of him in more fictional movie, playing himself doesn't work as well. That said, very funny in a goofball way. Respect.

    Animal Farm (UK 1955)
    Director: John Halas
    Maurice Denham (voices),

George Orwell's take on the nature of revolution makes for a strange cartoon, that is one that looks like it is aimed at the kiddies but is aimed at the adults. Nevertheless an important animated film.

Barbershop 2: Back in Business (USA 2004)
    Director: Kevin Rodney Sullivan
    Price: 19.98
    MPAA Rating: PG-13
Ice Cube (Calvin), Cedric the Entertainer (Eddie), Sean Patrick Thomas (Jimmy), Eve (Terri), Troy Garity (Isaac), Michael Ealy (Ricky), Leonard Earl Howze (Dinka), Harry J. Lennix (Quentin Leroux), Robert Wisdom (Alderman Brown), Jazsmin Lewis (Jennifer),

No sequel can be as fresh as its predecessor, but this one plays very safe with the formula. Cedric the Entertainer steals the show as usual.

    Dr. Strangelove (UK 1963)
    Director: Stanley Kubrick
    Price: 34.95
    MPAA Rating: NR
Peter Sellers (Dr. Strangelove/President Merkin Mu), George C. Scott (General "Buck" Turgidson), Sterling Hayden (General Jack D. Ripper), Keenan Wynn (Colonel "Bat" Guano), Slim Pickens (Major T. J. "King" Kong), Peter Bull (Alexi de Sadesky), James Earl Jones (Lieutenant Lothar Zogg), Tracy Reed (Miss Foreign Affairs), Jack Creley (Mr. Staines), Frank Berry (Lt. H. R. Dietrich), Shane Rimmer (Captain G. A. "Ace" Owens),

2 disc loaded edition of Kubrick's black comedy masterpiece. A film I have to be in the right mood for, and, like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, better to talk about afterwards than to actually sit through. And remember: "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room". Not Rated, but would be PG.

    Proof (Australia 1992)
    Director: Jocelyn Moorhouse
    Price: 19.97
    MPAA Rating: R
Russell Crowe (Andy), Genevieve Picot (Celia), Hugo Weaving (Martin), Heather Mitchell (Martin's Mother),

Drama centering on blind photographer, Martin, and his relationship with buddy, Andy, and his housekeeper Celia. Twisty and occasionally unexpectedly very funny. Highly recommended.

    Rapture (USA 1991)
    Director: Michael Tolkin
    Price: 19.97
    MPAA Rating: R
Mimi Rogers (Sharon), Darwyn Carson (Maggie), Patrick Bauchau (Vic), Marvin Elkins (Bartender), David Duchovny (Randy), Stephanie Menuez (Diana), Sam Vlahos (Wayne), Rustam Branaman (Conrad), Scott Burkholder (Evangelist), Vince Grant (2nd Evangelist), Carole Davis (Angie),

Unique mix of musings on the nature of sex and spirituality and the end of the world! Very adult in nature, but even in the wildest X-Files would you get David Duchovny AND a horseman of the apocalypse.

    Shampoo (USA 1976)
    Director: Hal Ashby
    Price: 14.94
    MPAA Rating: R
Warren Beatty (George), Julie Christie (Jackie), Goldie Hawn (Jill), Lee Grant (Felicia), Jack Warden (Lester), Tony Bill (Johnny Pope), Luana Anders (Devra), Carrie Fisher (Lorna), Howard Hesseman (Red Dog),

The sexual adventures of a lothario hairdresser in Hal Ashby's comedy of the permissive society. I've never warmed to this film at all. Much happier with the same director's "Harold and Maude". Carrie Fisher steals the film.

    Shrek 2 (USA 2004)
    Director: Andrew Adamson
    Price: 29.99
    MPAA Rating: PG
Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), Julie Andrews (Queen), Antonio Banderas (Puss in Boots), John Cleese (King), Rupert Everett (Prince Charming), Jennifer Saunders (Fairy Godmother), Aron Warner (Wolf), Kelly Asbury (Page/Elf/Nobleman), Cody Cameron (Pinocchio),

A successful visit to the well or perhaps mud hole finds Shrek having to deal with his new inlaws, who are less than happy to see him. Same Shrek mix of cultural references, slapstick and general anarchy. I give the edge to the first one. Antonio Banderas' Puss in Boots steals this installment.

    Naked Jungle (USA 1954)
    Director: Byron Haskin
    Price: 14.99
    MPAA Rating: NR
William Conrad (Commissioner), John Dierkes (Gruber), Douglas Fowley (Medicine Man), Charlton Heston (Christopher Leiningen), Eleanor Parker (Joanna Leiningen), Abraham Sofaer (Incacha), Leonard Strong (Kutina),

Heston vs. The Ants! Cheesy and overblown, but memorable eco horror in glorious Technicolor.

    Beast (France 1976)
    Director: Walerian Borowczyk
    Price: 39.95
    MPAA Rating: NR
Sirpa Lane (Romilda de l'Esperance), Lisbeth Hummel (Lucy Broadhurst), Elizabeth Kaza (Virginia Broadhurst),

Borowczyk's almost hard core musings on the nature of man's relation to the beast. Very erotic and disturbing in its 1976 Euro art porn way. 3 Disc set includes recently discovered "complete version". I'd never be seen dead with this movie. Now, where did I put my credit card...

Gone with the Wind (USA 1939)
    Director: Victor Fleming
    Price: 39.92
    MPAA Rating: G
Clark Gable (Rhett Butler), Thomas Mitchell (Gerald O'Hara), Vivien Leigh (Scarlett O'Hara), Barbara O'Neil (Ellen O'Hara), Leslie Howard (Ashley Wilkes), Olivia de Havilland (Melanie Hamilton), Evelyn Keyes (Suellen), George Reeves (Brent Tartleton), Ann Rutherford (Carreen), Fred Crane (Brent Tarleton), Hattie McDaniel (Mammy),

Colossal adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's celebrated novel. Perfectly cast, beautifully directed, gorgeous technicolor...dated romantic slush or cinematic perfection? You be the Judge! Fiddle-dee-dee. Four disc LOADED DVD!!

    Hillside Strangler (USA 2004)
    Director: Chuck Parello
    Price: 24.99
    MPAA Rating: UR
    C. Thomas Howell (Kenneth Bianchi), Nicholas Turturro (Angelo Buono), Allison Lange (Claire Shelton), Marisol Padilla Sanchez (Christina Chavez), Jennifer Tisdale (Erin), Lin Shaye (Jenny Buono), Kent Masters King (Gabrielle), Aimee Brooks (Felicia Brooks), Natasha Melnick (Karyn),

Documentary like look at the Hillside Strangler case. Novel in that two killers were involved together getting casual sexual kicks from murder. Good performances from Turturro and Howell, oodles of gratuitous nudity, after viewing the film, one feels kind of guilty of the crimes too.

    Martin (USA 1978)
    Director: George A. Romero
    Price: 14.98
    MPAA Rating: R
John Amplas (Martin), Lincoln Maazel (Cuda), Christine Forrest (Christina), Elayne Nadeau (Mrs. Santini), Tom Savini (Arthur), Sarah Venable (Housewife victim), Fran Middleton (Train Victim), Gaylen Ross (Biker's girl), George A. Romero (Father Howard), Al Levitsky (), Tony Buba (Drug dealer),

Sensitive study of troubled youth. Except that the troubled youth is a psychopath who thinks he is a vampire. Brilliant vampire mythology update from Romero. Hard to watch courtesy of some of Tom Savini's make-up effects, heartbreaking because of the sadness of the characters.

    Stepford Wives (USA 2004)
    Director: Frank Oz
    Price: 29.95
Nicole Kidman (Joanna Eberhard), Matthew Broderick (Walter Kresby), Bette Midler (Bobbie Markowitz), Glenn Close (Claire Wellington), Christopher Walken (Mike Wellington), Roger Bart (Roger Bannister), David Marshall Grant (Jerry Harmon), Jon Lovitz (Dave Markowitz),

Iffy remake of the 1975 satire classic. The comedy is broader and more obvious, the attempt to make the film more relevant, merely makes you realize just how subversive the original was.

Battle Beyond the Sun (USSR USA 1963)
    Director: Francis Coppola
    Price: 19.95
    MPAA Rating: NR
Ivan Pereverzev (Kornev), Aleksandr Shvorin (Andrei Gordienko),

Here's a curio - an attempt to get more life out of a Soviet Sci-fi epic (Nebo zovyot), so it was dubbed and re-edited for the US market by a youthful Mr. Coppola back in the day. Strictly for the curious. Not Rated, but PG fare.

    Elf (USA 2003)
    Director: Jon Favreau
    Price: 29.95
    MPAA Rating: PG
Will Ferrell (Buddy), James Caan (Walter), Bob Newhart (Papa Elf), Ed Asner (Santa), Mary Steenburgen (Emily), Zooey Deschanel (Jovie), Daniel Tay (Michael), Faizon Love (Gimbel's Manager), Amy Sedaris (Deb), Jon Favreau (Doctor),

Amiable Christmas comedy with Ferrell playing an adopted elf trying to trace his roots.

    Foul Play (USA 1978)
    Director: Colin Higgins
    Price: 14.99
    MPAA Rating: PG
Goldie Hawn (Gloria Mundy), Chevy Chase (Tony Carlson), Burgess Meredith (Mr. Hennessey), Rachel Roberts (Delia Darrow/Gerda Casswell), Eugene Roche (Archbishop Thorncrest/Archbishop's), Dudley Moore (Stanley Tibbets), Marilyn Sokol (Stella), Brian Dennehy (Fergie), Marc Lawrence (Stiltskin), Chuck McCann (Theatre Manager), Billy Barty (J.J. MacKuen),

Amiable vehicle for Goldie Hawn pitting her against a team of assassins. Great supporting cast, particularly Dudley Moore's sex obsessed neighbour.

Pitch Black 2: The Chronicles of Riddick (USA 2004)
    Director: David Twohy
    Price: 29.98
    MPAA Rating: R
Vin Diesel (Riddick), Colm Feore (Lord Marshal), Thandie Newton (Dame Vaako), Judi Dench (Aereon), Karl Urban (Vaako), Alexa Davalos (Kyra), Linus Roache (Purifier), Yorick van Wageningen (The Guv), Nick Chinlund (Toombs), Keith David (Imam), Mark Gibbon (Irgun),

Disappointing followup to David Twohy's excellent Alien Rip-off, Pitch Black. Choosing "Dune" as a model this time round for anti-hero Riddick to get into fights. More is definitely less. Too much CGI as well.

    Ragtime (USA 1981)
    Director: Milos Forman
    Price: 14.99
    MPAA Rating: PG
James Cagney (Rhinelander Waldo), Brad Dourif (Younger Brother), Moses Gunn (Booker T. Washington), Elizabeth McGovern (Evelyn Nesbit), Kenneth McMillan (Willie Conklin), Pat O'Brien (Delmas), Donald O'Connor (Evelyn's dance instructor), James Olson (Father), Mandy Patinkin (Tateh), Howard Rollins (Coalhouse Walker), Mary Steenburgen (Mother),

Sprawling epic from Milos Foreman from E.L. Doctorow's novel. Doesn't come off, but many many good bits and a once in a lifetime cast. Howard Rollins steals the flick as Coalhouse Walker, pity the actor died so young.

    Wetherby (UK 1985)
    Director: David Hare
    Price: 19.95
    MPAA Rating: R
Vanessa Redgrave (Jean Travers), Ian Holm (Stanley Pilborough), Judi Dench (Marcia Pilborough), Stuart Wilson (Mike Langdon), Tim McInnery (John Morgan), Tom Wilkinson (Roger Braithwaite), Marjorie Yates (Verity Braithwaite), Suzanna Hamilton (Karen Creasy), Robert Hines (Jim Mortimer), Joely Richardson (Young Jean),

Nice little psychological drama that gives Vanessa Redgrave a role to get her teeth into. Highly recommended to fans of A&E's mystery series.

    Age D'Or (France 1930)
    Director: Luis Bunuel
    Price: 24.95
    MPAA Rating: NR
Max Ernst (bandit chief), Lya Lys (the woman), Gaston Modot (the man),

Second collaboration between Bunuel and Salvador Dali, and while it contains nothing as eye-popping as the earlier film, Un chien andalou, still plenty of head swirling images and concepts.

Harry Potter: 3 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (USA UK 2004)
    Director: Alfonso Cuaron
    Price: 29.95
    MPAA Rating: PG
Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon), Pam Ferris (Aunt Marge), Fiona Shaw (Aunt Petunia), Harry Melling (Dudley Durlsey), Adrian Rawlins (James Potter), Geraldine Somerville (Lily Potter), Lee Ingleby (Stan Shunpike), Lenny Henry (Shrunken Head), Jimmy Gardner (Ernie the Bus Driver), Gary Oldman (Sirius Black),

Yeah, yeah, Harry Potter and the Ketchup of Desire, whatever...Brilliant third at bat for the Wizard-Boy-Wonder. The kids are getting the hang of the acting thing. A less frenetic director on board. A gem. Give the Whomping Willow an Oscar please.

    Splitting Heirs (UK 1993)
    Director: Robert M. Young
    Price: 9.99
    MPAA Rating: PG-13
Brenda Bruce (Mrs. Bullock), John Cleese (Shadgrind), William Franklyn (Andrews), Sadie Frost (Angela), Barbara Hershey (Duchess Lucinda), Richard Huw (Brittle), Eric Idle (Tommy), Stratford Johns (Butler), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Kitty), Rick Moranis (Henry), Madge Ryan (Woman with Dog),

Generally unfunny comedy from ex-Python Eric Idle, has possibly two good laughs, but otherwise tries too hard. The "Introducing John Cleese" credit is a nice touch though.

    Terminal (USA 2004)
    Director: Steven Spielberg
    Price: 27.99
    MPAA Rating: PG-13
Tom Hanks (Viktor Navorski), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Amelia Warren), Stanley Tucci (Frank Dixon), Chi McBride (Joe Mulroy),

Good natured comedy revolving around Hank's immigrant stranded at JFK airport. Too fluffy and sacharine to be really enjoyable.

    Hero (HK China 2002)
    Director: Yimou Zhang
    Price: 29.99
    MPAA Rating: PG-13
Jet Li (), Tony Leung (Broken Sword), Maggie Cheung (Flying Snow), Zhang Ziyi (Moon),

Gorgeous martial arts/romance fusion, similar to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. highly recommended.

    Spider-Man 2 (USA 2004)
    Director: Sam Raimi
    Price: 29.96
    MPAA Rating: PG-13
Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker), Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane Watson), James Franco (Harry Osborn), Alfred Molina (Dr Otto Octavius), Rosemary Harris (May Parker), J. K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson), Donna Murphy (Rosalie Octavius), Daniel Gillies (John Jameson), Dylan Baker (Dr Curt Connors), Bill Nunn (Joseph Robbie Robertson), Vanessa Ferlito (Louise),

Better than its predecessor, this sequel, has more laughs, a better villain and the action is more convincing. Dialogue has quotes around it too many times and the ending drags on...but a good return to the web.

    Zoe (USA UK 2001)
    Director: Deborah Attoinese
    Price: 19.95
    MPAA Rating: NR
Vanessa Zima (Zoe), Jenny Seagrove (Cecilia), Stephi Lineburg (Sarah), Victoria Davis (Ally),

Delightful tale of three runaway girls on a life affirming venture. Gentle drama marking Attoinese's assured directorial debut.
