Not a patch on the Richard Lester directed Musketeer movies. At least the European version boasted some naughty bits which are presumably trimmed for this PG rated version.

First Monday in October (USA 1981)
    Director: Ronald Neame

J. O'Neil (Justice Waldo Thompson), Charles Lampkin (Justice Josiah Clewes), Lew Palter (Justice Benjamin Halperin), Richard McMurray (Justice Richard Carey),

Amiable battle of the sexes legal shennanigans between Matthau and Clayburgh with them as rival Justices.

Married life in the US of A in the Eighties. Semi autobiographical tale of Nora Ephron's relationship with Carl Bernstein - only the names have changed to protect the innocent.

    Kotch (USA 1971)
    Director: Jack Lemmon
    Release Date: 07/06/2004
    Price: 14.95
    MPAA Rating: G
Walter Matthau (Kotch), Deborah Winters (Erica Herzenstiel), Felicia Farr (Wilma Kotcher), Charles Aidman (Gerald Kotcher), Ellen Geer (Vera Kotcher), Darrell Larson (Vincent Perrin), Larry Linville (Peter), Paul Picerni (Dr. Caudillo),

Matthau (in old age make-up) plays Joseph P. Kotcher in this sensitive and funny look at the age gap. Sentimental but balanced. One wishes Lemmon had directed more films.

Name of the Rose (France 1985)
    Director: Jean-Jacques Annaud
    Release Date: 07/06/2004
    Price: 19.98
    MPAA Rating: R
    Screen Ratio: 1.85:1
Sean Connery (William of Baskerville), F. Murray Abraham (Bernardo Gui), Christian Slater (Adso of Melk), Elya Baskin (Severinus), Michel Lonsdale (The Abbot), Volker Prechtel (Malachia), Feodor Chaliapin (Jorge de Burgos), William Hickey (Ubertino de Casale), Michael Habeck (Berenger), Urs Althaus (Venatius), Valentina Vargas (the girl),

About time. DVD release for Jean-Jacques Annaud's excellent adaption of Umberto Eco's clever rehash of Sherlock Holmes. Connery is at his very best. The murder mystery angle delivers. Fans of Cadfael should love it. The only drawback - all the supporting characters are so disgusting.

Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (UK 1969)
    Director: Ronald Neame
    Release Date: 07/06/2004
    Price: 14.98
    MPAA Rating: PG
Maggie Smith (Miss Jean Brodie), Robert Stephens (Teddy Lloyd), Pamela Franklin (Sandy), Gordon Jackson (Gordon Lowther), Celia Johnson (Miss MacKay), Diane Grayson (Jenny), Jane Carr (Mary Macgregor), Shirley Steedman (Monica), Lavinia Lang (Emily Carstairs), Antoinette Biggerstaff (Helen McPhee), Margo Cunningham (Miss Campbell),

The role that defined and typecast Maggie Smith from then 'til now - it's as though Miss Jean Brodie got transplanted to Hogwarts and changed her name to Minerva McGonagall. A liberated teacher givers her values to her charges and learns a few lessons of her own in the repressed environment of 30's Scotland.

    Danger: Diabolik (Italy 1967)
    Director: Mario Bava
    Release Date: 07/13/2004
    Price: 14.99
    MPAA Rating: PG-13
Adolfo Celi (Ralph Valmont), John Phillip Law (Diabolik), Marisa Mell (Eva Kant), Michel Piccoli (Insp. Ginko), Terry-Thomas (Minister of the interior), Mario Donen (Sgt. Danek),

Campy spy spoof in the days before filmmakers realised that ladies look better in the skin tight leather costumes (Actually the Avengers figured that one out before anyone). Stylishly directed by horror veteran Bava and an Ennio Morricone score too. Dated but fun.

    Manchurian Candidate (USA 1962)
    Director: John Frankenheimer
    Release Date: 07/13/2004
    Price: 14.95
    MPAA Rating: PG-13
Frank Sinatra (Major Bennett Marco), Laurence Harvey (Sgt. Raymond Shaw), Janet Leigh (Rosie), Angela Lansbury (Eleanor Iselin (Mrs. Shaw)), Henry Silva (Chunjin), James Gregory (Senator John Iselin), Leslie Parrish (Jocie), John McGiver (Senator Thomas Jordan), Khigh Dhiegh (Yen Lo), James Edwards (Corporal Melvin), Douglas Henderson (Colonel),

To cash in on the impending release of Jonathan Demme's remake (which looks very promising), we get Frankenheimer's original cold war brainwashed assassin movie, which racks up so much tension you may need a theraputic massage afterwards. Highly Recommended. Oh and you'll have a hard time watching Angela Lansbury doing her Miss Marple thing again too.

    Castle Keep (USA 1969)
    Director: Sydney Pollack
    Release Date: 07/20/2004
    Price: 19.94
    MPAA Rating: R
Burt Lancaster (Major Falconer), Patrick O'Neal (Captain Beckman), Jean-Pierre Aumont (Count), Peter Falk (Sergeant Rossi), Astrid Heeren (Therese), Scott Wilson (Corporal Clearboy), Tony Bill (Lt. Amberjack), Al Freeman (Pvt. Allistair Piersall Benjamin), James Patterson (Elk), Bruce Dern (Billy Bix), Michael Conrad (Sgt de Vaca),

Surreal WWII film with pretensions. A platoon holes up in a french castle determined to save it from the Germans. Falk is brilliant as a soldier who just wants to get home to his bakery.

    Starsky & Hutch (USA 2004)
    Director: Todd Phillips
    Release Date: 07/20/2004
    Price: 27.95
    MPAA Rating: PG-13
Ben Stiller (David Starsky), Owen Wilson (Ken Hutchinson), Snoop Dogg (Huggy Bear), Fred Williamson (Captain Doby), Vince Vaughn (Reese Feldman), Juliette Lewis (Kitty), Jason Bateman (Friday), Amy Smart (Holly), Carmen Electra (Staci), George Cheung (Chau), Chris Penn (Manetti),

Appalled at the concept, this is actually a rather witty send up of a TV series I still have a soft spot for. Set in a recreated 70s.

    Conquest (Italy 1983)
    Director: Lucio Fulci
    Release Date: 07/27/2004
    Price: 19.95
    MPAA Rating: NR
Andrea Occhipinti (Ilias), Jorge Rivero (Maxz), Violeta Cela (), Maria Escola (), Sabrina Siani (Ocron),

Lucio Fulci's completely over the top swords and sorcery opus. Oodles of gratuitous nudity and bloodshed. I love these things and this is one of the better Euro trash Conan rip offs. I'm sure Blue Underground will do their usual superb job of the release.

    Hellboy (USA 2004)
    Director: Guillermo Del Toro
    Release Date: 07/27/2004
    Price: 28.96
    MPAA Rating: PG-13
John Hurt (Professor Bruttenholm), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Rupert Evans (Agent Myers), Selma Blair (Liz Sherman),

Ron Perlman in the red latex makes this comic book adaptation stand out, mainly because the emphasis IS on the comic. some bits don't work, but this is definitely one of the better examples of its genre.

    Thunderbird 6 (UK 1966)
    Director: David Lane
    Release Date: 07/27/2004
    Price: 14.95
    MPAA Rating: G
Keith Alexander (Black Phantom/John Tracey), Sylvia Anderson (Lady Penelope), Ray Barrett (John Tracey / The Hood), Peter Dyneley (Jeff Tracey), David Graham (Parker / Brains), David Holiday (Virgil Tracey), Shane Rimmer (Scott Tracey), Matt Zimmerman (Alan Tracey),

DVD release for Gerry Anderson's now slightly camp puppet action adventure. I'd recommend the series (released by A&E) first. This adventure boasts an awful closing joke.

    Thunderbirds Are Go! (UK 1966)
    Director: Gerry Anderson
    Release Date: 07/27/2004
    Price: 14.95
    MPAA Rating: G

Gerry Anderson's puppets hit the big screen, this time with a guest appearance of a puppet version of Cliff Richard and the Shadows! As said stick with the series first.
