Christian Frei's "War Photographer" was nominated for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. It tells the tale of Jim Nachtway, a unique individual who has dedicated his life to capturing horrific images of man's inhumanity to man. Jim Nachtwey has been a war photographer for the last 20 years. His images from Africa, Kosovo and the Middle East are stark reminders of the price paid by those caught in the crossfire of war.
Frei's film is told through the eyes of those whop know Jim Nachtwey and through the photographer's own eyes. Frei devised a video camera that actually attached to Mr. Nachwey's still camera. This provides the viewer the unique opportunity of seeing Nachtwey work. The cummulative effect is powerful and unforgettable. Jim Nachtwey is a couragous man with a mission. Forget the Rambo image of courage. Nachtwey is a quiet, reserved man. He puts his life on the line in order to expose the horror of war. In one scene we see a bullet miss Nachtwey's head as he tries to help another mortally wounded photographer. Though the movie doesn't deal with it, Mr. Nachtwey was wounded on December 10th, 2003 when a grenade was thrown into his vehicle. Mr. Nachtwey was covering the Iraq War for Time magazine at the time. Nachtwey is recuperating from his wounds.
Powerful film. Unforgettable images. Good sound. Fair extras.
Picture Quality: 10/10
No pixilation, artifacts or delineation problems. The movie is filled with captivating images that are both repulsive and seductive. A monument to Jim Nachtwey's dedication to bringing the hidden to the light.
Sound Quality: 8/10
A bit flat in places but that doesn't really matter. The images are what is important. No loss of dialogue.
Easter Eggs:
None found.
Extra Features: 5/10
The interviews with director Frei and Mr. Nachtwey are informative. I learned more about the film's subject from the interview than the film itself. He is still somewhat of an enigma.
There are several galleries. The protagonist gallery is a short clip identifying the people interviewed in the movie. The location gallery is a prize. It is a slide show of many of Mr. Nachtwey's famed pictures.
The Final Word:
Long live freedom of the press. "War Photographer" will give you a renewed respect for the men and women who risk it all to bring you reports from the world's hell holes. A powerful film. A must have DVD.
