Review
If you are going through a rough divorce and are relying on alcohol to get you through it, "War of the Roses" may not be the movie for you. If you are contemplating divorce (or marriage!) then you really should see this dark comedy. I have always liked art with a dark twist to it. "War of the Roses" will have you rolling with laughter if you are the kind of person who can find the funny side of domestic violence, attempted murder, animal abuse and acidic sarcasm ladled on by the gallons.

Barbara and Oliver Rose (Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas) are an affluent couple who's marriage takes a nose dive after 18 years. Barbara wants a divorce. The workaholic attorney, Oliver doesn't want her to go. These materialistic, self-centered people dissolve before the viewers eyes in animalistic barbarians who will stop short of nothing to get their way. In the middle is Gavin D'Amato (Danny DeVito) as Oliver's divorce attorney.

There isn't one misstep in this bitter brew. One of the funniest, twisted mainstream movies ever produced. Great Holiday entertainment.

The Disc
I've watched the movie twice with Danny DeVito's commentary track. After watching the poster gallery, which showed each poster followed by a close-up of Mr. DeVito on said poster, I was beginning to think he was a prima donna. Then I watched the movie with the commentary track. Hell, I watched it again. Hilarious, informative and real. What a breath of fresh air this guy is. Great movie. Great picture and sound. A must have DVD.

Picture Quality: 10/10
Lush photography that harkens back to the great studio films of yesteryear. The credit sequence filmed of an expensive handkerchief (which DeVito picks up and blows his nose on after the credits end) sets the rich visual tone for this dark tale. Very pleasing to the eyes. No artifacts noticeable.

Sound Quality: 8/10
Very good sound. Nothing spectacular, but then this isn't a sound effects intensive film.

Menu: 10/10
Great elegant design, with just enough chaos thrown in to keep with the tone of the movie.

Extra Features: 10/10
Outstanding commentary track! (See above) I wonder who the jerk composer he was talking about was. I hope it wasn't Jerry Goldsmith as I had the pleasure of meeting him. t would burst my bubble if he was the jerk DeVito talked about on the DVD. I guess you'll have to buy the disk to find out what I'm talking about. The 20 minutes of deleted scenes are very good. Mr. DeVito pokes fun at himself. Nice barb by Rhea Pearlman on the audio track. Cool couple. For those interested, the entire script is here for you to read. I'd rather enjoy the script as interpreted by the cast.

The Final Word:
One of my all time favorites (but I'm a sick puppy!) A very funny film that should not be missed. This DVD is the best format on which to watch "The War of the Roses."
