1-Disc Keep Case
|
Wannabes is a tale of two brothers (William DeMeo and Conor Dubin) who are fed up with being nobodies. So they do what any typical young Brooklyn men would do given the same circumstance. They hook up with the neighborhood mob boss. What follows is a look at the life of made men and wannabes.
While Wannabes was okay as a film, it was not impressive as a DVD. There are serious focus issues. At some points during the film, the image is completely out of focus. At other times, just portions of the image are fuzzy. Neither case is acceptable. Exposure was good overall and in a couple of spots, where highlights would generally be a problem, the exposure is handled beautifully. Kudos to the photographer and the transfer crew. But shame on them for the focus and resolution faux pas.
Picture Quality: 3/10
One word. Focus. I have no idea what happened, but something went horribly, horribly wrong in the focus department. What's even more puzzling is how this disc got to market. There apparently was no concern with quality control. It's hard to tell if the focus issues are with the film transfer or if the fault is with the film itself. It seems to be a little of both.
Sound Quality: 6/10
Overall, the audio on this disc was not too bad. There's nothing to write home about, but the audio is clean and clear and did a pretty good job with the Dolby 5.1. Quite honestly, I was surprised, considering the problems with the picture quality.
Menu: 5/10
I've said it before and I'll say it again. The best thing you can do to enhance the DVD experience is keep the menu clean and simple. I don't mind lots of choices; I just want it clean and simple. Wannabes sticks to this methodology. Although, in all honesty, the menu is sparse anyway.
Extra Features: 4/10
The only extra feature was a Wannabes trailer. It was clean and succinct.
The Final Word:
All in all, Wannabes was okay. It tries to be the typical mob flick, but comes up a little short with the story. It's quite predictable and while some performances are really good, others verge on pathetic, namely Joseph D'Onofrio's Vinny character. Joe Viterelli really disappointed me as well. He has done the mob character much better in other films and frankly; I am little confused with his performance. There is a decent performance turned by Conor Dubin. It's hard not to be influenced by great movies like Donnie Brasco and Goodfellas, but if you're going to make mob flicks, you'd better expect it. Finally, I think the title sums it up best, Wannabes.
