Review
William Lustig's "Death Wish" rip-off, "Vigilante" is one of the most distasteful, offensive, poorly written and executed movies that it has been my displeasure to watch. Totally bereft of any socially redeeming value whatsoever, "Vigilante" is a perfect film to bring up to those who defend violence in the movies while condemning anything that has to do with sex. I don't have a problem with violence in the movies. What I have a problem with is ignorant writing, illogical plot holes, bad photography, sound and music. I hope the people involved in this travesty were well paid because this one has nothing to recommend it.

"Vigilante" was made by the same guy who brought you "Maniac Cop". Robert Forster, Fred Williamson, Richard Bright, Rutanya Alda, Joe Spinell, Woody Strode, Carol Lynley and a host of other recognizable B-movie actors appear in this movie. If I had been desperate enough to be in this movie, I would want my image digitally removed. The plot is a complete rip-off of "Death Wish." However, "Vigilante" has none of the intelligence and class of Michael Winner's 1975 movie which touched off a firestorm of social debate. Forester's wife and son are attacked by a group of thugs. The little boy, hiding in an upstairs bathtub, is shot point blank with a double-barreled shotgun, while his mom is being repeatedly stabbed in the backyard. Mom has the pleasure, along with the viewer, of seeing her son's brains fly out the bathroom window before she is attacked. Those are images I wish I could erase from my memory. Forester joins a group of co-workers who roam the neighborhood killing as many criminals as possible. This is pure raw sewage cinema. Rent or purchase at your own peril. Shame on everyone who made this movie, and shame on you if you buy it.

The Disc
The worst of the worst. Disgraceful movie. Bad photography, sound and writing. A waste of a great cast. Director Lustig has proved he can make a good movie. This film just leads me to hope he was just whoring for the money.

Picture Quality: 5/10
Inconsistent photography. There are many night scenes which seemed to have been filmed in the headlights of the crew's cars. Much of the daytime location photography is also grainy. Not much to make a good transfer with. Anchor Bay seems to have tried, but all the poor qualities of the original print seemed to have made their way onto this disk.

Sound Quality: 2/10
The dialogue was completely over shadowed by the loud electronic music. I had to constantly adjust the volume on my sound system to hear the dialogue and then mute out the sudden surge in loud music during the film's many brutal scenes of mayhem.

Menu: 4/10
The design is very cheesy. It looks like the old psychedelic "trails" created with a chroma key in 1960s rock videos. Easy to navigate. No pictures on the chapter selection menus.

Extra Features: 4/10
There are a lot of extras, no doubt. There is a commentary track that is kind of interesting. To me it was like hearing criminals justify their actions though! Lots of languages so moral cretins in many countries can enjoy this horror. The multitude of trailers and other ads play on the worst paranoia in society.

The Final Word:
I would have a hard time deciding if a person made a bigger mistake buying or renting this movie or spending the same amount of money on crack-cocaine.
