Review
One of the worst movies I've ever seen. This is being promoted as part of the Dario Argento collection. This one was only produced by Argento. The director was Michele Soavi. The following synopsis is a one paragraph, sarcastic spoiler. Don't read further if you might want to rent or buy this piece of crap.
Teutonic Knights slaughter a village of devil worshippers in the 1500s. A church is built on the site to entomb the demons. Present day. A nosy, greedy church librarian breaks the seal on the demons tomb and releases them. A group of people stuck in the church turn into homicidal maniacs and kill each other. A girl has sex with a goat man. The church fall down on everyone and sends them to hell. To bad the master print of this movie escaped the carnage.
For those who get these types of movies for the gore and sex, the nudity is minimal and un-erotic. The gore is also minimal. No Argento style shocks at all. Soavi doesn't Argento's style and flare. 50 minutes of boredom between the opening slaughter and the climatic carnage at the church. Ho-hum.
Picture Quality:7/10
Grainy for much of the movie's running time. No artifacts. Poor delineation of colors.
Sound Quality:10/10
Excellent sound track. To bad the music by "The Goblins" (Argento's house band) and Keith Emerson is horrendous.
Menu:8/10
Cool 3D design. Easy to navigate. The only navigation I'd recommend would be to find the stop button.
Extra Features:4/10
There is a lengthy trailer that has no dialogue. The trailer promises Argento style shocks, but the movie doesn't deliver them. There is the usual, excellent Anchor Bay biography of the director.
The Final Word:
The catch phrase of this movie is "You Haven't Got a Prayer." Neither does this DVD.
