Review
EI's critic Chuck Boring panned "Spy Kids 2" when it was released in the theaters. Can't say that I disagree with him that much. CLICK HERE to read his archived review. I rated the film a little bit higher because I liked the animation. I'm a big Ray Harryhausen fan and I enjoyed the film's homage to Mr. Harryhausen. My 5-year-old daughter loves the DVD, but my older kids hate it. My 13-year-old son said that he would give it zero stars. He found the rival set of Spy Kids annoying, especially Miss Osment. The best thing about the movie were the bloopers over the closing credits.

The Disc
Hit and miss movie, good picture and sound. Tons of extras.

Picture Quality: 7/10
The picture is not bad. There is a bit of shimmering in places. The picture is also soft around the edges during some of the brighter scenes. No pixilation or artifacts noticed.

Sound Quality: 8/10
The 5.1 track will give your sound system a good workout. "Spy Kids 2" is a sound effects intensive film. At times, the bass becomes overbearing, with the sub-woofer scarring the viewer out of their seat. Especially toward the end. Otherwise, there is a nice balance between the ranges. The highs and lows are full. rich and crisp.

Menu: 10/10
Outstanding interactive menu, using great animation from the film. Easy to navigate. Very complex. I can't say there are no Easter Eggs, but I didn't find them.

Extra Features: 7/10
There are a ton of extras. How much you enjoy them will depend on your tastes. They would have been more interesting if the film had been better.

I enjoyed the latest installment of Robert Rodriguez's "Ten Minute Film School." I'd like to see him release an entire DVD on his film techniques. He is interested in helping out young filmmakers.

There are 8 deleted scenes. Some folks would argue that the entire film should have been deleted, but I wouldn't go that far. The scenes are OK, nothing special.

The Transmooker Trouble game is just a trivia game based on the film. Get three questions right and you win. Miss four and you destroy the world. The game sucked. I deliberately missed four questions and there was no apocalyptic animation blowing up the world. What good is a game without consequences!

The Gadget featurette is cool.

The Final Word:
Small children who have little discernment should enjoy this one. Whether you want your little ones to view it is another question. The film's target audience; young teens will lose interest fast.
