Review
Robert Rodriguez's double feature DVD "El Mariachi/Desperado" includes a student film he made with his little sister and brother. This sweet, funny fantasy showed a lighter side to Rodriguez. Therefore, it was no surprise to me that the man who brought us the truly disturbing "From Dusk Til Dawn" and the inspired violent "El Mariachi" has a wonderful family film like "Spy Kids" in him. With a little James Bond, a serving of Willy Wonka and who bunch of experience having siblings, Rodriguez spins the tall tale of a husband and wife who are spies for opposing powers who give it all up to raise a family.

Gregorio (Antonio Banderas) and Ingrid Cortez (Carla Gugino) have settled down to a life of domestic bliss. Each of their respective employers want them to come back, but there are two reasons they won't: Carmen (Alex Vega) and Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara). Carmen is the intelligent big sister who loves when her mom tells her the story of the spies who fell in love. Carmen doesn't realize that the spies are her parents. Juni is the wimpy little brother obsessed with the kids show, "Fooglies." Fegan Floop (Alan Cumming) is a cross between Willie Wonka and Frankie from 'Frankie Goes to Hollywood.' He has several strange little sidekicks which look like characters from a McDonald's commercial on acid. Juni has a lot of growing up to do. He gets his chance when his parents are kidnapped by Floop in order to assist Mr. Lisp (Robert Patrick) carry out his plot to take over the world. I'll say no more.

The acting is great (campy). The special effects are excellent. The plot is silly and the production design is very imaginative. There are some nice supporting performances by Teri Hatcher, Cheech Marin, Mike Judge, Richard Linklater and Danny Trejo. I liked seeing Mr. Trejo playing a nice guy against type. I really like the fact that Rodriguez stuck to his Hispanic roots and filmed the movie in Chile and San Antonio. Rather than project the location as a poverty stricken area, Rodriguez shows a modern city that is clean, sophisticated and family friendly. I found it refreshing that he took this stance rather than locate his story in one of Steven Speilberg's generic suburbs. The two child actors are appealing and funny. This is an all around fun movie that will appeal to parent and child alike.

The Disc
Excellent movie, sound and picture. No extras. The high price for a vanilla DVD (a specialty of Disney) can almost be overlooked because the movie is so good.

Picture Quality: 10/10
Outstanding picture. great flesh tones, vivid colors. Outstanding special effects in a cartoonish sort of way. No artifacts or pixilation. I loved the musical number in Floop's virtual room.

Sound Quality: 10/10
The sound will shake the walls. Lots of action. Hear hoards of helicopters fly through your living room. Jet-packs careen off your walls!

Menu: 10/10
Nice interactive menu. Cool, fun design. Easy to navigate.

Extra Features: 2/10
A whole lot of nothing. There is the theatrical trailer, an ad for the Spykids.com weblink and TV spots for some kid's television shows. This would have been a great movie for extras. Oh well.

The Final Word:
I'm torn by this one. I went on a rant after "Mighty Joe Young." A very high-priced vanilla DVD from Disney. I really like this movie and am tempted to buy it. I'm still mad that Disney puts out high-priced vanilla.

I rented this DVD from cafeDVD.com. As I've said many times before, once you try them, you'll never go back to the neighborhood video outlet. Order on-line. 4 or 5 days later the DVDs are in your mail box. Keep them a week (for $3.00! ) and then send them back in the postage pre-paid envelope. Check them out. Cafe DVD.com is well worth the price of admission!
