I love this movie. I recommended it for years to my good friend, Jonathan Hickman.
He wrote an excellent review for the video risk column a while back. Please click here to access that review.
Great job by Anchor Bay. I wish I had purchased the deluxe boxed set with more features including
deleted scenes. Oh well.
Picture Quality: 10/10
This is so superior to the video copies I have seen. Director Mann uses light in symbolic ways
throughout the movie. I was reminded of Mario Bava at times. The movie is visually exciting. Mr.
Mann's framing is so precise. I don't think you will find a finer copy of this film as far a picture
quality is concerned.
Sound Quality: 10/10
Excellent. The disc includes the THX Optimode, which is an audio and visual test which allows you to
adjust your TV and sound system for optimal viewing and listening pleasure. Pretty cool stuff even if
my system isn't sophisticated enough to really benefit from it. The sound was great. I prefer the 2.0
Surround, but the Dolby Digital 5.1 is also excellent.
Menu: 10/10
Nice job of incorporating the sounds, visuals and characters from the film. Easy to navigate.
Extra Features: 10/10
I'm always harping on the lack of commentary tracks on many DVDs. I didn't feel cheated by no commentary track on this disc because the 2 filmed interviews were so good. Both interviews are relatively short. 10 minutes for Mr. Spinotti and 18 minutes for the actors. In this case short isn't bad because the interviews are full of so much cool information. You get a feel for the collaborative effort that went into this film. You also get a great feel for the director even though he isn't interviewed. Each person interviewed gives a unique insight into how Mr. Mann put his vision on the screen. These short interviews are worth their weight in gold. There is no extranious filler material.
The theatrical trailer gives the viewer some hint as to why this movie failed at the box-office. It is poorly paced written and produced (the trailer, not the movie!). I would not have wanted to see the movie based on this trailer.
The bios are extensive and insightful.
The Final Word:
Another top-self product from the good folks at Anchor Bay.
Check out their web-site.
They put out great products. Their inventory is vast and varied. This is one of my favorite films.
This DVD is the best copy of the movie that I have ever seen. Thanks Anchor Bay! Hunt down Manhunter!
