James & The Red Balloon is yet another compilation DVD in the long successful Thomas the Train series. It contains the following new episodes: James & The Red Balloon, Twin Trouble, The World's Strongest Engine, Edward The Really Useful Engine, Dunkin Duncan & Rusty Saves The Day. The stories all have an underlying message that hard work is good and the diffent episodes explore such topics as business synergy, hubris, sibling rivalry, and seniors in the workforce. So there are themes for both parents and the future CEOs they are rasing packed within. It was a pleasant journey through Sodor for the whole family, but I don't think it will be in the running for an Oscar.
The disc works well, my six year old daughter had no trouble navigating the DVD and playing the games.
Picture Quality: 8/10
The picture was full of color. It might have been a bit crisper, but I think that the softness is more of trademark of Thomas the Train, than it was any downfall in the production value of the DVD.
Sound Quality: 9/10
It sounded great and comes equipped to take advantage of your Dolby Surround Sound.
Easter Eggs:
No Easter Eggs found during review.
Extra Features: 8/10
The games were great fun for my child and she had no trouble handling the controls herself on this one.
The Final Word:
If you and your children like Thomas the Train, then you will love this DVD. I especially enjoyed the sing-a-long. The tune was catchy, but I was more than a bit amused by the site of the dock workers dancing around like it was a music video. It was almost as if the Village People had been reduced to stop motion animation characters and put on the set as dock workers.
