Review
If you look up the term "Black Comedy" in the dictionary you would probably find a movie poster for "Heathers" as the perfect example of the term. Released in 1989 after a rash of teenage suicides throughout the country, "Heathers" dared to examine the subject in a witty and sardonic manner. Written by Daniel Waters, "Heathers" proved to be a daring, profane and totally original work that is ultimately life affirming. This dark fantasy is filled with great performances, endlessly quotable dialogue and Waters’ unique teen slang invented for the screenplay. High school is hell and "Heathers" proves it!

Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) is a high school junior who has chosen to hitch her star to the school’s elite, a triumvirate of bitches each named Heather who rule school with iron maiden fists. Heather Chandler (the late Kim Fields) is a blond bitch goddess who causes psychological damage to all around every time she opens her mouth. She is the ice queen supreme who leads the pack of harpies. Heather McNamara (Lisanne Falk) and Heather Duke (Shannon Doherty) are the evil daughters to Heather Chandler’s queen bitch step-mother. Veronica is actually repulsed by Heather Chandler’s ruthlessness, but she realizes she would rather be in the inner circle where there is less chance of becoming one Heather C’s casualties. Enter Jason Dean (Christian Slater), a leather clad bad boy who has transferred into the school. Jason’s motorcycle powered good looks and dangerous rebel persona moisten Veronica to the point she questions her alliance with the medusa triplets.

Veronica and Jason flirt and flit around each other until the inevitable happens; they "accidentally" murder Heather C together. Veronica’s talent for forgery offers them a way out, and Heather’s demise from ingesting hull cleaner is transformed from a homicide to a suicide. Then the funniest thing happens, the hypocrisy of society transforms the dead she-monster into a misunderstood young girl of unfathomed depth and character. Jason also realizes that others are salivating to fill the void left by Heather C’s crash through her glass table. Veronica begins to suspect that her cool boyfriend is not the answer to her prayers. For those who haven’t seen the movie I shall reveal no more.

On the face of it, a comedy about teen suicide would seem to be reprehensible. Some critics have said as much. They missed the boat completely with that conclusion. If we can’t discuss serious matters in unorthodox ways then what the heck is the 1st Amendment all about? Daniel Waters created a hilarious story which amazingly got made. The acting is top notch. The direction by Michael Lehmann is perfect. There are so many wonderful things in this movie that it is hard to limit the length of this review for fear of leaving out kudos to some deserving member of the cast or crew. This is a keeper.

The Disc
Great movie, great extras, great picture and sound. Another great product from one of the industry leaders, Anchor Bay.

Picture Quality: 10/10
For such a dark premise, director Lehmann created bright beautiful visuals. The THX remastered picture is excellent. No pixilation or chroma noise. Lisanne Falk never looked better!

Sound Quality: 10/10
>From the ticking of one of Jason's bombs to the retching of Veronica at the college kegger, all of the audio accents of "Heathers" are there for you to enjoy on the THX remastered sound track.

Menu: 9/10
Great design, easy to navigate. The one point reduction is part of my on-going protest of Anchor Bay's policy of not including pictures on their "chapter selection" menu. I know, I know, I'm one of those idiots who couldn't order from Denny's menu without the pictures!

Extra Features: 10/10
The documentary is outstanding. I enjoyed the reflections of the cast and crew members. Damn, Lisanne Falk still looks good. Why don't we see more of her in film? Noticeable missing from the documentary was Kim Fields. There is a memorial to her at the end of the documentary. After viewing this, I went to IMDB and found out that she died this year of a brain tumor. Our best to her family. As was pointed out on IMDB, I to found it ironic that one of her characters most famous insults in "Heathers" was "Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?" Anyway...

The commentary track is excellent and informative. The bios are in depth. There is also a lengthy script excerpt of the original ending. I like the movie the way it is. I'm glad whoever decide to end it the way they did, did so.

The Final Word:
Winona Ryder is quoted as saying that "Heathers would be my favorite movie even if I wasn't in it." I'm glad she is in it. It is one of my twisted favorites also. This DVD is a welcome addition to any library.
