Review
"Fear Dot Com" would more aptly be titled "Stupid Dot Com." "Fear Dot Com" is the dumbest horror film I have seen in years. I'm not a fan of "ghost in the machine" movies. "Child's Play" is the exception to that rule. Director Malone ripped off the dark motifs of David Fincher's brilliant "se7en." If "se7en" had never been made, I could praise the visuals of "Fear Dot Com," but as it has been done before, and better, "Fear Dot Com" offers little to praise. The only reason I gave this mess a "2" instead of a "0" rating is because of the over the top performance by Stephen Rea as a dead serial killer called The Doctor and for the presence of the underused Michael Sarrazin.

For those who care, "Fear Dot Com" concerns a rash of mysterious and grizzly deaths. The victims have one thing in common. They all logged onto an Internet site called "feardotcom.com." 48 hours later they died. Stephen Doriff plays the detective trying to solve the puzzle. He looks completely embarrassed to be in this movie. Directors have the luxury of taking their names off of a film and using the ubiquitous pseudonym Alan Smithee. Actors don't have that luxury.

"Fear Dot Com" features numerous scenes of naked and near naked women being tortured to death. Oh joy! What will they think of next.

The Disc
Terrible movie. Great picture and sound. Fair extras.

Picture Quality: 9/10
This movie hurt my eyes. Every scene is dismally dark. Even the interior of the police station and jail is lit as if a gothic rave were to take place in it. This fact makes the transfer all the more amazing. There are no real delineation problems. The Blacks are excellent. There is good definition and contrast in the many shadows present. Rich colors and flesh tones.

Sound Quality: 9/10
The track makes great use of the surround sound feature. Excellent balance between the ranges, although the sub-woofer becomes overbearing at points.

Menu: 5/10
Bland design based on the film's dark images. Easy to navigate. No Easter Eggs found.

Extra Features: 5/10
I really didn't want to subject myself to the full commentary track. I sampled it. Director Malone is very upbeat about this project. Sorry I couldn't share in his joy.

"Visions of Fear" is little more than a glorified trailer. There is a photo gallery with stills and conceptual drawings. The standard filmographies are thrown in for good measure. Yawn!

The Final Word:
Unless you get your jollies by watching near naked women being humiliated and tortured, skip this one. If you do get your jollies from that sort of thing may I suggest some intense therapy.
