"Dogtown and Z Boys" is the most exciting and entertaining documentary I have seen in years.
If you aren't a fan of extreme sports, don't fear. "Dogtown" will appeal. Skater turned filmmaker Stacy
Peralta's film won Best Documentary at the Independent Spirit Awards, the Audience Award and Best Director
at Sundance and the Audience Award at the AFI Film Festival.

Great movie. Nice tranfer. Excellent sound! Good extras.
Picture Quality: 10/10
This movie wasn't filmed in widescreen format. Little if anything was lost in the transfer to full frame format. The picture quality on both the big screen and the DVD transfer varies depending on the source material. There are many archived scenes that were filmed with 8mm and 16mm. I only noticed one artifact. No delineation problems or pixilation.
Sound Quality: 10/10
This soundtrack ROCKS! I'm a Classic Rock kind of guy. The music of Alice Cooper, James Gang, T-Rex, Jimi Hendrix and Ted Nugent among others provide the perfect accompaniment to the story being told. Nice balance between all the ranges. No distortion. This is one of the few non-Concert films you will want to play loud!
Menu: 10/10
Great design. Powerful driving music mixed with interactive menus. Easy to navigate.
EASTER EGGS: There are a bunch of Easter Eggs hidden among the menus. Finding them is half the fun so I won't tell you where they are. I found three. If you find more e-mail me and gloat!
There is a funny clip in which the people being interviewed rag on the filmmaker for asking lame questions.
Another Easter Egg links you to a montage of some of the fantastic still photos not included in the main body of the film. The third one I found shows Peralta, Ron Crowder and another guy skating one of the sites from their youth.
Extra Features: 8/10
The commentary track is infectious. Director Stacy Peralta was on of the "Z Boys." This movie is a work of love and passion for the man. His emotion shows in every frame of the movie. His passion also shows on the commentary track.
If you access the "Freestyle Experience" option an ICON will appear periodically during the film. When the ICON appears, click on it to view extended footage of the "Z Boys" at work.
The alternate ending is OK. Nothing special. Fans of Tony Alwa will enjoy it. The production notes included on an insert are informative. There are 4 trailers for this and other Sony films including "XXX."
Fans of the sport will enjoy checking out the weblinks. There are weblinks to www.thrashermagazine.com, www.dogtownmovie.com and www.cthe.com (Columbia Tristar entertainment)
The Final Word:
I hope this movie finds a wider audience on DVD than it did in the theaters. This is the perfect "summer movie." That is quite an accomplishment for a documentary. Do not miss this one! Thanks to Sony for expanding the horizons of home entertainment.
