Review
The biggest surprise I encountered while watching the "Def By Temptation" DVD was discovering the fact that the movie was made by Troma. For those who don’t know, Troma is the New Jersey film company which has turned out over 200 low grade horror and exploitation films such as "The Toxic Avenger" "The Class of Nuke Em High" and "Blood Sucking Freak." Troma’s president, Lloyd Kaufman is a later day Roger Corman wannabe. While Kaufman has given several major actors their first roles (Kevin Kostner, Marisa Tomei, Vincent D’ Onofrio and Billy Bob Thorton to name a few), Troma’s movies are not much more than cheesy special effects, lots of nudity (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and horrible story lines. Troma is to Hollywood what the WWF is to the NFL. In a guilty pleasure sort of way, Troma is also fun. I mention this because actor director James Bond III’s succubus horror flick "Def By Temptation" is not half bad.

Joel (James Bond III) is the orphan of Minister Garth (Samuel L. Jackson). Like his father before him, Joel plans on becoming a minister. Since the death of his parents, Joel and his brother "K" (Kadeem Hardison) were raised by their Bible thumping Grandma (Minnie Gentry) in South Carolina. By the way, Joel’s dad died in a traffic accident caused by the sexy succubus demon from hell known as Temptation (Cynthia Bond).

Joel is now 21. The nebbish young man wants to escape the protective confines of his aunt’s house. He calls "K," now a b-movie actor living in New York and asks to stay with him till he finds himself. The evil succubus knows he is coming and lays in wait. She must destroy Joel because he is the last of his line. Joel is the last true believer who can destroy Temptation’s evil. Throw in several sex scenes, several frights and comic relief provided by Kadeem Hardison as "K" and Bill Nunn as Dougy, the perennial loser with the ladies, and you have a not bad horror movie. Not a great one, but worth a look.

The Disc
Fair movie. Lousy picture, good sound. Funky extras.

Picture Quality: 4/10
This was a low-budget independent movie. While "Def By Temptation" would be considered the "Citizen Kane" of Troma's catalogue, it is still a b-movie and it looks it. Poor delineation of colors, especially during the movie's several dark interiors. The day light scenes and well lit interior scenes are just fine. There is a huge difference in quality between the light and dark scenes. No artifacts present. The DVD was digitally remastered which leads me to believe the picture problems can be attributed to the source material for the transfer.

Sound Quality: 8/10
Nice soundtrack. Good use of atmospheric and shock effect music. No loss of dialogue.

Menu: 7/10
Nice design. Nice background animation. Easy to navigate. The chapter selection menu only has a few chapter stops. You also have to push the "Play Movie" button to access the chapter selection.

Extra Features: 8/10
Cheese with a capital "C." The Troma Intelligence Test pretty much sums up Troma's mission statement. To access the test you push the "Yes! I Want TIT!" button. The test consists of 20 questions. If you get the question right, you are treated to a 10 to 20 second movie clip from a Troma film that features naked women. If you get the question wrong you see another clip of people being killed by Troma villains. With two exceptions, the rest of the extras are in the same vein as the TIT test.

The exceptions are the 2 minute commentaries about the movie "Def By Temptation" by Michael Gingold and Mike Mayo. I wish there had been a director's commentary on this one.

The Final Word:
Horror fans will like this one. It was nice to see an all-black horror movie that paid homage to the great Blaxploitation horror films of the 70s. The cast is likable, and the movie is not bad. Worth a rent.

As usual, I rented this one from cafeDVD.com. Log-on, make your selection and it comes right to your front door. You can't beat them for service and selection.
