Review
Wolfgang Petersen's epic film tells the story of a young crew of a German submarine, lead by their wise Captain, as they search for enemy vessels to destroy. After finding virtually nothing, with boredom and frustration mounting, they finally discover a convoy of seemingly unguarded British freighters. Bent on taking them all out, the men fire torpedoes, sinking three of the vessels, only to have a British Destroyer appear from nowhere to hunt them down with an endless barrage of depth charges. "Das Boot" tells the chaotic and dreadful story of the crew's battle to survive.

"Das Boot" was originally a 6-hour German TV mini-series. The original US theatrical version was 2 hours and 25 minutes long. This "Director's Cut" DVD is a three hour version Director Petersen made from the original TV mini-series.

The Disc
Not too much to speak of in extras, but the Director's Cut is a must have! The Superbit aspects are a treat with this engaging film!

Picture Quality: 9/10
Despite the picture being a bit dated at times, the actual transfer is wonderful... full of excellent sharpness and vibrant colors. Some grain appears, but is mostly due to the way the film was shot, rather than the transfer. Overall it is an excellent picture to watch.

Sound Quality: 9/10
When you listen to the depth charges rock the boat, along with the silence before and after, you will see that the sound transfer is better than expected. Great seperation between effects and voice.

Menu: 7/10

The Final Word:
The film is a masterpiece by an excellent director. It's really too bad that the Submarine movie genre has been done to death because I'd love to see someone try to top Das Boot. Impossible though. This is a must have for your collection!
