"Coupling" is the brainchild of writer Steven Moffat and producer Sue Vertue. The series sprang from their life experiences when they first met and began dating. "Coupling" revolves around the love, er make that sex lives of six young Brits. Even though "Coupling" revolves around six main characters, this BBC series is no rip-off of "Friends."
Susan (Sarah Alexander) is a hot, modern blonde who likes porn and tripods. Patrick (Ben Miles) is Susan's conservative ex boy-friend. Patrick is a tripod. (Use your imagination. Lower, get in the gutter my friends!) Sally (Kate Isitt) is a rich liberal who would compromise her political beliefs for a tripod. Steve (Jack Davenport) is Susan's new boyfriend. Steve is having trouble convincing his ex, Jane (Gina Bellman) that she really is his ex. Jane is a desperate air head who might as well have the word doormat tattooed on her forehead. Jeff (Richard Coyle) is a manic wildman who has advice to give on any subject you can imagine.
"Coupling" should work with American audiences. There are some political references unique to the British Isles, but they don't get in the way of the fun. Richard Coyle is a riot to watch. He's a less nerdy, more manic version of Kramer from "Seinfeld." You will have to hear Jeff explain the Giggle Loop and the Sock Gap to truly appreciate his genius. I have a new object of desire! Sarah Alexander is a pert, sassy little blonde actress. Oh, to hear the words "don't stop" in that lovely British accent! Gina Bellman's Jane is one of the strangest characters you are likely to encounter anywhere. Jane says to Steve "I like remaining friends with my ex's, its nicer and more legal than stalking."
"Coupling" is one of the nicest surprises I've encountered working at EI. I hope you discover the joy of this bawdy comedy from across the pond.
Very funny TV series. Good picture, sound and extras.
Picture Quality: 7/10
Keep in mind that this is a TV series, a BBC TV series at that. The quality of the original material isn't as good as some slicker Hollywood productions. Still, the colors are good and the flesh tones are nice. The picture does get soft around the edges in places. No artifacts or pixilation.
Sound Quality: 8/10
I wish there wasn't a laugh track. I hate laugh tracks. This show is funny without one. No loss of dialogue. The lower range is a bit flat, not that it matters.
Menu: 10/10
Very cool menu. The animated main menu takes you through scenes from the entire first season. Easy to navigate.
Extra Features: 8/10
The behind the scenes interviews include the entire cast, writer Moffat and producer Vertue. Not being familiar with these folks, I enjoyed learning about them. One fun part is when the actors talk are asked if they would ever hang out with the characters they play. Writer Moffat and producer Vertue talk about the origin of the series. Producer Sue Vertue is a very sexy woman. I can see why she would have cast Sarah Alexander to play the character based on her.
There is a featurette covering a publicity photo shoot. It is just fun fluff. The bios and filmographies are as comprehensive as a non-Anchor Bay DVD can be. There are trailers for several other BBC products.
The Final Word:
A sexy, funny romp from across the sea. Worth a rent. You will probably buy it after renting. Great characters who get inside your skin.
