Review
There is really no way to review this made for TV movie without comparing it to Brian DePalma's classic version of the Stephen King novel. While there are some very good things in this version, there is much to be despised. "Carrie" tells the story of ultimate outsider Carrie White (Angela Bettis). Carrie White was raised by her fanatical mother Margaret (Patricia Clarkson). Margaret White it the poster child for religious mania. Carrie White also possesses telekinetic powers. When she is pissed off, things move.

Everyone knows the story. Carrie has her first period at age 16. All the girls throw tampons at her. One girl feels bad about it and has her jock boyfriend take Carrie to the prom to make up for the tampon assault. Other bad girls rig the voting for king and queen at the prom and dump a bucket of pig's blood on Carrie. Lots of people die.

Sorry for the spoiler. but hey, who hasn't read the book or seen the movie? This version follows the format of Stephen King's original book. The story is told in flashback as the police try to solve the mystery of the prom night massacre. This version also tacks on a ridiculous ending. Otherwise, much of the original script for DePalma's version finds its way into this movie.

On the positive side: Angela Bettis is very good as the title character, until the prom scene. In the original, Sissy Spacek glowed as her character came to life for the first time. Her transformation made what followed all the more horrific. Ms. Bettis never achieves that level in her performance. "Ginger Snaps" star Katherine Isabelle is sexy, slutty and great as Tina (P.J. Soles' role in the original). Her performance is almost an homage to Ms. Soles' performance in the original. My thought after watching this and several other of Ms. Isabelle's films was that she could very well be the P.J. Soles of this generation. Not a bad place to be!

So much for the film's good points. "Carrie" is a needless remake that doesn't deliver any real shocks. It is also poorly shot on video. Patricia Clarkson is as bland as she has ever been in the role of Margaret White. Piper Laurie earned an Oscar nomination for her turn as the fanatical Maragaret White. Ms. Laurie was batshit crazy, while Ms. Clarkson only seems to be a very mean person.

Nancy Allen as Chris Hargensen was a sexy harpy in the original version. She manipulated her moronic boyfriend played by John Travolta with her sexual charms and feminine wiles. In this version, blond cutie Emilie de Ravin is a rank amateur. Billy Nolan has also changed. Instead of the beer guzzling, testosterone driven redneck, Billy Nolan is the kind of kid who would open up on a high school cafeteria with an AK-47.

The special effects are also terrible. The CGI is so bad, that I was reminded of that terrible kid’s series "Butt Ugly Martians." Also missing is the dramatic confrontation between Carrie and her mother. There was one scene that was quite good from a special effects point of view. As Carrie waits for her prom date to arrive, her furniture floats in the air due to her anxious state. That was a nice touch.

The Disc
Lame remake. Terrible picture. OK sound. No real extras.

Picture Quality: 3/10
This has to be one of the worst pictures I've ever seen on a major studio DVD. The movie looks as if it was shot with a camcorder. The flesh tones are predominantly yellow. The special effects have a cartoon quality. There are major delineation problems and pixilation. Shimmering. If you like shimmering, this is the DVD for you.

Sound Quality: 8/10
The sound is fine. No loss of dialogue. To bad the score is so bad, because you can hear it just fine. The movie doesn't take advantage of the surround sound features very well.

Easter Eggs:
No Easter Eggs found during review.

Extra Features: 2/10
Nothing but the trailer and some sneak peaks for some much better horror films.

The Final Word:
Don't waste your time with this one. Get the original. Way over priced.
