Review
Warren Beatty, who triples as writer, director, and star of this political satire, plays Senator Jay Billington Bulworth, a suicidally disillusioned liberal politician who's grown tired of the puppet he's become in the political arena. In a fit of despair before his oncoming re-election campaign, Bulworth puts a contract out on himself and takes the opportunity to be bluntly honest with his voters. Offending just about everyone who's ever supported him, he's finally found the liberation that has escaped him for so long, and consequently has a new lease on life. The problem is, the man he paid to hire a hitman to kill him can’t be found, so in the midst of spouting off offenses to everyone, he’s also running for his life. Amid the chaos, Bulworth falls for Nina (Halle Berry), a street-wise girl from South Central, and becomes keen to the urban flavor.

Though his freestyle rhyming and snapping insults are absolutely brilliant in the first half of the film, Bulworth’s “white guy trying to be hip” shtick becomes tiresome in the latter half, eventually dragging the entire film down with it. Despite some major flaws though, Bulworth is an intelligent, biting satire that is an eye opener to watch.

The Disc
20th Century Fox kept this DVD about as dry and boring as possible, a total disservice to this unique film. Thankfully, they atleast gave an A effort in the transfer of this disc to DVD.

Picture Quality: 8/10
Though it doesn't come in 16:9 enhanced, the picture quality is excellent. No major flaws to note, and the layer change was acceptable.

Sound Quality: 9/10
Hip hop soundtracks are a beauty to behold if you've got enough punch (a big ass subwoofer) in your sound system, and the 5.1 audio track of 'Bulworth' definitely adheres to this philosophy. Crisp, clear, and thumping!

Menu: 6/10
While there isn't a whole lot that can get confusing in a DVD that has as its one feature a trailer for the film, the chapter selection was a bit cumbersome. Overall, very uneventful.

Extra Features: 1/10
I would hope that in this day and age where DVDs routinely come in 2-disc sets, featureless discs like this will be extinct.

The Final Word:
Warren Beatty's political satire, despite its many flaws, is creative and fascinating. Definitely worth a one time rental, but if you really loved this film in the theaters, yet another "buy it solely for the movie, not the disc".
