Review
I'll admit up front that this movie infuriated me. Not because of Michael Moore's brave exercise of free speech at the Oscars. Not because of Mr. Moore's obviously one-sided point of view on this subject. Not because of his racist cartoon history of America. All of those thing both irritated me and made me laugh. It wasn't the fact that Mr. Moore's film was more propaganda than documentary. What infuriated me was the way Michael Moore ambushed actor Charlton Heston at the end of the movie. Anyone watching this movie can tell that Mr. Heston is already suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease when this ambush interview was done. Had Mr. Heston had his complete faculties, he would have chopped up Mr. Moore is short order.

"Bowling for Columbine" is Michael Moore's anti-gun pseudo-documentary. The movie is no more a documentary than Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will" was. Both films are powerful pieces of propaganda. "Bowling for Columbine" raises some interesting points. It does provoke discussion on the subject. In this respect, the film succeeds. However, calling this a true documentary supports the contention by some that the politically correct factions of America are bent on rewriting history.

Moore's film purports to examine the American culture of gun violence. He wants us to believe that the proliferation of guns in America is the cause for the incredibly high rate of gun violence in America. Ironically, he points out that there are more guns in Canada than there are people in Canada. Yet that country doesn't have the rate of gun violence that America does. To me, that shoots down Mr. Moore’s theory. Either that of it just means that Canadians are wimps! (Sorry about that Ted!)

"Bowling for Columbine" contains some very funny material. I hate the fact that I laughed so hard at the racist, animated "Brief History of America." Yes, the segment is racist. It stereotypes white people as gun crazy slave owners. It is as racist a statement as anything ever put out by the KKK. Mr. Moore is from a generation of people made to feel ashamed of themselves and their country. They never healed from Vietnam or Watergate. The founding fathers would be ashamed.

The Disc
Powerful, if misguided movie. Great picture, sound and extras.

Picture Quality: 10/10
Excellent transfer. No artifacts, pixilation or delineation problems. Some of the footage is archived material and is of weaker visual quality.

Sound Quality: 10/10
Again, the sound is excellent. About the only part of the DVD that will challenge your home theater system is the Marilyn Manson video on the extra disk.

Easter Eggs:
None found.

Extra Features: 10/10
There is more of Michael Moore than you probably would want to watch. To be fair to my readers, I like the way the last election turned out. I like the way America is helping out the people of Iraq. Michael Moore doesn't feel the same way as I do. I like that Michael Moore and I both live in a country that allows us to say what we want without fearing a bullet in the back of the head. On to the extras.

The Film Festival Scrapbook contains interviews and acceptance speeches at Cannes and the Toronto Festival. To bad Mr. Moore didn't show the same respect for the Academy that he did for the sponsors of the other festivals.

Speaking of the Oscar speech. Mr. Moore explains his actions in a brief segment filmed in a backyard in Michigan. He does have balls!

The Corporate Cop segment is funny. It makes me think he is a commie bastard, but it is funny.

The best thing on the DVD for my money is the Marilyn Manson video. It rocks. Mr. Manson's segment in the main movie is also great. Manson is a musician, not the anti-Christ. If you don't like what he has to say don't listen. If you don't want your kids to listen to him, then be a parent damn it. The bottom line is, be a parent who holds your kids accountable and they probably won't wig out at school with a machine gun.

The Return to Littleton segment is a speech given by Mr. Moore at a college in Denver. More of his propaganda. I hope a large percentage of this movie went to the victims of the two madmen at Columbine.

The Final Word:
If you are on the left, you will love this movie. If you are on the right, you need to watch this in order to see how misguided the rest of the population really is.
