New DVD Reviews:

Juno (2007) (PG-13)
I really thought I was going to hate this film. Amid all the buzz and the Oscar win by screenwriter Diablo Cody, I just knew I was going to despise a film about teen pregnancy. However, it had two actors from "Arrested Development" (still the best canceled television show in the last ten years) so I figured it couldn't be all bad. To my great surprise, it is a wonderful film and so worthy of all the awards and accolades that it has garnered in the last six or so months. I dare say it is one of the best films I have seen in the last five years. Ellen Page is a miracle on film and Jason Reitman hit all the right notes as director.

Lions for Lambs (2007) (R)
It is a very rare thing for me to sit through a movie based on war--any war--and get something out of it besides anger. However, Robert Redford has made a movie that is so brilliant, so daring and so gut-wrenching that I am proud to announce that "Lions for Lambs" was, without doubt, the best movie that was made in 2007. You can scream about "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" but neither of them can touch the sensitivity infused in every frame of this film.

American Dad: Vol. 3 (2005) (NR)
Seth MacFarlane is a wonder to me. How all those voices that he creates can come out of one person is almost unnatural. "American Dad" is the second series created by Mr. MacFarlane along with "Family Guy" and is by far the most crude. I love every second of it. As Stan, the ultra right wing father who works for the C.I.A., MacFarlane brings us a character we can hiss at one second and applaud the next. You have to be a fan of irreverant humor to enjoy this kind of adult minded cartoon but it is one that I never miss on Sunday nights on FOX.

Adams Chronicles, The (1976) (2008) (NR)
Produced for America’s bicentennial, The Adams Chronicles scored a rare television hat trick: critical raves, stratospheric ratings, and scholarly recognition. Based on more than 300,000 pages of historical documents, the 13-episode series examines American history through four generations of Adamses and 150 years of American history from the birth of the Revolution through the gilded Age. The Adams include John Adams—passionate revolutionary and second president; John Quincy Adams—proud son of a famous father and sixth president; Charles Francis Adams—skillful minister to Great Britain during the Civil War; historian Henry Adams; and railroad magnate Charles Francis Adams, Jr.

Jimmy Carter Man from Plains (2008) (PG)
If the past few years has exemplified anything, it’s somewhere in the American consciousness, is the idea of not backing down. Even when things head south, our leaders are the kind of people who “stay the course” and that’s all that matters. The current theory seems to apply only to those who make the case for war. So what happens to the person who acts in the same in your face mind-set toward the cause of world peace? Jonathan Demme’s reverential documentary about former President Jimmy Carter’s recent contentious book tour is a solid example. Demme wonderfully displays these points because of his subjects, Jimmy and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, which only compliments his reflective filmmaking technique.

Bee Movie (2007) (PG)
Having just graduated from college, a bee by the name of Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) finds himself disillusioned with the prospect of having only one career choice—honey. As he ventures outside of the hive for the first time, he breaks one of the cardinal rules of the bee world and talks to a human, a New York City florist named Vanessa (Renee Zellweger). He is shocked to discover that the humans have been stealing and eating the bee’s honey for centuries. He ultimately realizes that his true calling in life is to set the world right by suing the human race. That is until the ensuing chaos upsets the very balance of nature. It is up to Barry to prove that even a little bee can spell big changes in the world.

I Am Legend [Blu-ray] (2007) (PG-13)
Francis Lawrence's remake I Am Legend is easily the strongest of the three adaptations of Richard Matheson's classic sci-fi novel about the last man on Earth. Part science fiction, part horror/thriller, Legend is an entertaining if flawed genre pic that will thrill Will Smith fans but most likely disappoint those looking for a deeper, more intelligent movie-going experience. The film starts off strong, with a chilling depiction of a post-apocalyptic New York City. Will Smith is effective, but the film loses its way after the halfway mark, and fails to come up with an effective or satisfying conclusion.

No Country For Old Men (2007) (R)
Delivering their most viscerally compelling and ambitious film yet, Joel and Ethan Coen wrote, directed and produced No Country for Old Men based on the novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy. The film features virtuoso acting turns by Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson, Javier Bardem, Golden Globe nominee Kelly MacDonald (2005 Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie nominee for “The Girl in the Café”) and Josh Brolin (Grindhouse).

101 Dalmatians: Platinum Edition (1961) (G)
This 1961 classic has been wonderfully restored. You know the story. Roger is a struggling songwriter. His wife Anita adored and loves him. They are poor in money, but rich in love. The couple owns two Dalmatians: Pongo and Perdita. Their pets have a litter of puppies. Enter Anita's old college friend Cruella De Vil. Ms. De Vil is a fashion maven cum vampire. She loves the Dalmatians. Not as pets. Cruella De Vil is the PETa Anti-Christ. She wants to steal the dogs, and as many other Dalmatians she can find in order to make a coat out of them.

Nancy Drew (2007) (PG)
First off, I loved this movie! At times I get lazy. If a DVD comes out and EInsiders has an archived review of the film from it's theatrical release, I will read the old review to see if it jibes with my opinion of the film. If so, I will make a few comments and then cut and paste the old review. Of course there are times when I read one of our other critic's reviews and wonder to myself just what were they thinking? This is one of those times.

Carmen Miranda Collection
IT’S TIME TO SAMBA WITH THE THE BRAZILIAN BOMBSHELL

CARMEN MIRANDA COLLECTION

Five Disc Set, Featuring Four New-To-DVD Titles Dances To DVD
June 17 From Fox Home Entertainment

CENTURY CITY, Calif. – Grab your fruit hats and shake things up when the Carmen Miranda Collection debuts as a five-disc set June 17 from Fox Home Entertainment. Paying tribute to the
best-loved and most colorful performer from the canon of Fox musicals, the Carmen Miranda Collection features five of the iconic Portuguese star’s most popular films, including Doll Face, Greenwich Village, If I'm Lucky and Something For The Boys, debuting on DVD for the first time. The collection also includes a newly remastered version of The Gang’s All Here. A pop culture phenomenon whose influence remains to this day, Miranda gained fame for popularizing the samba, donning elaborate headdresses made of fruit and wearing her trade-mark sarongs, earning her two nicknames – The Brazilian Bombshell and The Lady in the Tutti Frutti hat. Full of song and dance, the films in the Carmen Miranda Collection include: Doll Face, the story of a woman dismissed from an audition who decides to write a biography to gain culture, but things get out of hand when a ghostwriter is hired to do all the work; Something For The Boys about a group of friends who inherit a southern plantation and in order to convert the space into a hotel they decide to put on a show. Greenwich Village follows a novice composer who falls for a singer while hoping to publish his concert in New York; If I’m Lucky is a musical rendition of a crooner who goes to the extreme when running for State Governor; and in The Gang’s All Here a soldier has a love affair with a showgirl.

The Gang’s All Here also features revealing bonus materials including audio commentary, photo galleries, original theatrical trailer, deleted scenes, featurettes and more. The Carmen Miranda Collection will be available for the suggested retail price of $49.98 U.S./$69.98 Canada. Each title is also available individually for $14.98 U.S./$16.98 Canada. Fox Home Entertainment will also be releasing other popular films starring Carmen Miranda including Weekend In Havana, That Night In Rio and Down Argentine Way, priced separately for $19.98 U.S. / $21.98 Canada. Prebook is May 21, 2008.

MARKETING:
Fox Home Entertainment will support the release of the Carmen Miranda Collection with a comprehensive marketing campaign, featuring targeted national advertising and a publication relations campaign focusing on broadcast, print, radio and online outreach.

The five-disc Carmen Miranda Collection features four new-to-DVD titles:

Doll Face – presented in full screen with English Mono and Stereo sound, Spanish and French subtitles and the following bonus material:
* Isolated Score Track
* Deleted Scene with Optional Commentary by Film Historian John Cork
* Original Theatrical Trailer
* Photo Galleries
As the indomitable character Chita Chula, Carmen Miranda dazzles in several production numbers, most notably “Chico Chico” in this rollicking musical based on a book written by burlesque legend Gypsy Rose Lee. Banned from an audition for a Broadway show because she lacks cultural refinement, “Doll Face” Carroll (Vivian Blaine), decides to generate publicity by writing her autobiography. But after her manager pairs her with a ghostwriter, the two seem to want to collaborate on more than just the book. Also featuring beloved song man Perry Como, Doll Face proves anybody can hit the big time if they have the “write” stuff!

Greenwich Village – presented in full screen with English Mono and Stereo sound, French subtitles and the following bonus material:
* Photo Galleries including advertising collateral, behind-the-scenes, portraits and more
Carmen Miranda is a knockout as a singer/fortuneteller in this lavish musical. At first, when ambitious young composer Kenneth Harvey (Don Ameche) stumbles upon Danny's Den, a roaring ‘20s speakeasy in New York’s burgeoning art district, it seems like a great opportunity to work on material. Not to mention, he’s fallen for the club’s headliner (Vivian Blaine). But while Harvey is distracted by love, club owner Danny O'Mara (William Bendix) is secretly lifting Harvey's tunes. Filled with
show-stopping song and dance numbers, including performances by the inimitable Perry Como, Greenwich Village is a musical treasure you’ll want to visit again and again.

If I'm Lucky – presented in full screen with English Mono and Stereo sound, Spanish and French subtitles and the following bonus material:
* Isolated Score Track
* Excerpts from Singing With The Stars featuring Carmen Miranda
* Original Theatrical Trailer
* Photo Galleries including advertising collateral, behind-the-scenes, portraits and more

This vivacious remake of the film “Thanks A Million” stars Hollywood legends Carmen Miranda, Perry Como, Edgar Buchanan, Vivian Blaine and Harry James. When the vocalist (Como) for an underemployed swing band is hired to perform at a gubernatorial candidate’s rally, he’s delighted. But before he realizes it, he’s part of a corrupt scheme to make him the candidate! And even after he tells the public that his backers are crooks, he still wins the election! Featuring Miranda’s dynamic numbers “Follow The Band,” and “Bet Your Bottom Dollar,” this classic hit is one you’ll feel lucky to add to your DVD collection.

Something For The Boys –– presented in full screen with English Mono and Stereo sound, Spanish and French subtitles and the following bonus material:
* Carmen Miranda: That Girl From Rio Documentary – four part documentary including “Coming to America,” “The Spirit Of Brazil,” “Hollywood” and “After Fox”
* Photo Galleries
Carmen Miranda joins Vivian Blaine and Phil Silvers in this energized musical comedy. “T” is for trouble when three cousins – Blossom (Blaine), Chiquita (Miranda) and Harry (Silvers) Hart inherit a Texas plantation. Realizing their property is plagued by overdue taxes and under-fed termites, the Harts are thrilled when an army sergeant (Michael O'Shea) offers to convert the place into a home for army wives. So, in the meantime, the Harts put on a show to raise money for Uncle Sam! Filled with love, laughs and some of Cole Porter’s most beloved songs, including “Hey, Good Lookin'” and “Could It Be You?,” there’s something for everyone in Something For The Boys!

The final title, The Gang’s All Here, is fully remastered, presented in a full screen, with English Mono and Stereo sound, Spanish and French subtitles and the following bonus material:
* Commentary by Film Professor Drew Casper
* Busby Berkeley: A Journey with a Star featurette
* Deleted Scene: The $64 Question
* Alice Faye’s Last Film: We Are Still Here!
* The Phil Harris – Alice Faye original Radio Broadcasts:
o A Movie For Alice (November 11, 1946)
o Phil Harris – Movie Star (April 24, 1949)
* Original Theatrical Trailer
* Photo Galleries
In this Busby Berkeley delight, chorus girl Eadie Allen (Alice Faye) meets and falls for Sergeant Andy Mason (James Ellison) just before he’s shipped off to war. The good news is that Eadie becomes the club’s headliner, and Andy returns home a war hero. The bad news: Andy is unofficially engaged to another woman. Enter Eadie’s friend and co-star Dorita (Carmen Miranda), who’s determined to set things straight between the two lovers. Filled with lavish musical productions, including Miranda's famed Lady in the Tutti-Frutti Hat, The Gang’s All Here should dance its way into any classic musical DVD collection!
