New DVD Reviews:

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay [Bluray] (2008) (R)
Like the previous incarnation of "Harold & Kumar," I found this latest crazy Asian dudes roadtrip to be sloppy, sophomoric and often flat-out hilarious. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay makes no effort in trying to be anything other than lowbrow slapstick comedy, and perhaps that's what makes these films so appealing. It manages to straddle the line with racial jokes that occasionally border on offensiveness, but manage to flip them around just enough generate the laughs Cho and Penn try so hard to get in nearly every minute of the film. Some of them fall flat (like the rehashed Neil Patrick Harris side-trip), but enough work that it makes for an entertaining movie night with friends.

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay [DVD] (2008) (R)
"Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay" was well worth the wait. The original comedy was the "Animal House" for the Generation Y crowd...of course "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" was actually funny. Hilarious to be more accurate. Is the sequel as good as the original. Well, to quote Maxwell Smart "missed it by that much." The movie is still hilarious.

Dark City: Director's Cut (1998) (NR)
Alex Proyas' director's cut of "Dark City" is a revelation. I enjoyed the movie when first released. It is so much richer this time around. I like when an artist gives the audience credit for having a brain. Usually a director gives the audience credit, but the producers assume that audiences are a brain-dead as they are. It is easy to see why this movie scared the crap out of the producers: it is a very intelligent and innovative fim. While the theatrical film was still brillient, the director's cutis the film that should have been released to the theaters. Gone is the opening narration which basically gives away the entire story.

Inglorious Bastards, The: 3 Disc Edtion (1978) (NR)
Ask the average movie fan about "The Inglorious Bastards" and they will say it is the title of an upcoming Quentin Tarantino movie. Most folks don't realize that if Tarantino ever makes his film, it will be a remake of a 1978 was film by Italian director Enzo Castellari. "The Inglorious Bastards" has the catch phrase "Whatever the Dirty Dozen did They Do It Better!" While I can't report that the movie succeeds in that tall claim, I can say that Castellari's movie is a fun, exciting movie. I hope that Tarantino takes the premise and gives us a movie worthy of his talents.

Beau Brummell: This Charming Man (2008) (NR)
Beau Brummell: This Charming Man is an extraordinary production starring a perfectly cast James Purefoy as the dandy of Regency England who changed male fashion forever. Prior to Brummell’s re-imagining of male fashion, men were still wearing white powder on their faces, wigs, perfumes and all manner of extravagant finery. It is truly difficult to fully appreciate, with our modern sensibilities, how radical Brummell’s actions were. He stripped everything away and, in addition to dressing simply and with consummate taste, he advocated the strictest guidelines in personal grooming and hygiene.

Executioner's Song, The: Director's Cut (1982) (NR)
Norman Mailer's book "The Executioner's Song" stands with Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" as one of the two greatest non-fiction crime novels in American literature. Writer/director Lawrence Schiller did the research for the Norman Mailer book. Mr. Schiller went to Utah, interviewed the parties and witnessed the execution of Gary Gilmore. While Norman Mailer may have received the literary credit for the book, Mr. Schiller got the film rights. He wrote and directed the Emmy-winning TV miniseries. The 157-minute movie originally aired in two-parts on network television. A 137-minute European theatrical version was later released which included nudity and rougher language. This DVD combines elements from the European theatrical release with the TV miniseries version. (It doesn't include Ms. Arquette's wonderful nude scene except in shadowy passing). Director Schiller trimmed about 20 minutes from the original version. While the movie runs smoothly, fans of the original will miss certain parts. Actress Jenny Wright's oddball performance is trimmed down to almost nothing.

Los Angeles – August 20, 2008 – Peace Arch® Home Entertainment (USA) LLC, a division of Peace Arch® Entertainment Group Inc. (AMEX:PAE - News) (TSX:PAE.TO - News), a leading worldwide producer and distributor, is pleased to announce the DVD release of the psychological thriller The Devil’s Mercy. Directed by Melanie Orr (Harm’s Way, Grindstone Road) and starring Academy Award® nominee Stephen Rea (The Crying Game, Stuck, V for Vendetta), Hannah Lochner (Harm’s Way, Dawn of the Dead), and Deborah Valente (Animal 2, Resident Evil: Apocalypse) The Devil’s Mercy unmasks the evils that can lie hidden behind a white suburban picket fence. The film will be released on DVD on October 7, 2008.

When Beth and Matt Winters discover a beautifully renovated apartment in an old Connecticut house it seems too good to be true. Their new downstairs neighbor, Tyler Grant (Stephen Rea), has a niece named Kayla who seems to be a perfect playmate for the Winters' six-year-old son Calvin. When Calvin becomes increasingly restless around the Grants and tells his mother there are monsters in the house, Beth dismisses it as just her son’s active imagination but soon has to face the fact that there may be something sinister going on within their perfect house. Fangoria Magazine says The Devil’s Mercy is “…another fascinating turn by the Oscar-nominated Rea, a performer whose work in horror has always been nothing short of magnetic.”

In an interview with Fangoria.com Director Melanie Orr stated: “My approach to Devil’s Mercy was to accentuate the suspense of the story … I wanted to balance the bloody scenes carefully with the reactions of the characters, and not overly dwell on the deaths, but more on how they affect this young, vulnerable family.” Eerie and creepy Rea and Lochner are not your typical friendly next door neighbors.

Peace Arch® Home Entertainment Inc. will be releasing The Devil’s Mercy on DVD on October 7, 2008. The DVD will be available for $29.99 SRP at all major retailers across the United States. New England and witchcraft meet in this frightening film, with chilling performances by its stellar cast.

THIS AMERICAN LIFE THE FIRST SEASON
THIS AMERICAN LIFE THE FIRST SEASON

This American Life: The First Season (9/23)
Nearly 15 years after it began as a weekly hour-long program on Chicago Public Radio, the widely-popular, award-winning THIS AMERICAN LIFE television series allows audiences to see its subjects up-close and personal. Host and creator Ira Glass hits the road collecting stories from everyday folks traveling to Iowa pig farms, following a first-time filmmaker in California, photographing a raucous night at a Chicago hotdog stand and more in six episodes each with its own theme of human life. The result is true stories that are surprising, emotional and often funny. A glimpse into authentic lives of everyday people, THIS AMERICAN LIFE: THE FIRST SEASON has been deemed “out of this world… It’s all very intriguing and oddly funny at unexpected moments…” (Chicago Sun Times). Guiding audiences through each episode, Glass asks honest questions, makes keen observations and speaks in the same direct, informal way that made the radio version of the show a cult favorite, heard by 1.7 million listeners on over 500 stations. Intelligent, clever and humorous, the critically-acclaimed documentary series THIS AMERICAN LIFE: THE FIRST SEASON arrives on DVD September 23 from Showtime, CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment. Showtime’s “jewel of a TV series” (Newsweek) includes all six first season episodes plus brand new commentary with host Ira Glass and director Christopher Wilca along with a photo gallery.
