“Sesame Street’s” Alaina Reed-Amini Dies December 17, 2009

Alaina Reed-Amini, Nov. 10, 1946 – Dec. 17, 2009, Broadway and television actress, has died at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. Her death comes after a two-year long battle with breast cancer. She was 63.

From 1976 to 1988, she played the role of ‘Olivia’ on the popular children’s show “Sesame Street.”

The Olivia Robinson character was a photographer as well as the kid sister to the original Sesame character ‘Gordon.’ Loved by generations of young children, she became the lady who was always singing and chatting with Big Bird and Bert.

When she left the show, she went on to portray the landlady and best friend of the main character in NBC’s “227.” Set around an apartment building numbered 227 in a racially mixed neighborhood in Washington, DC, the show ran for five seasons and proved a successful comedy portraying the everyday lives of those who lived there. In the final season, Alaina Reed-Amini married a character played by her then real-life husband, Peter Hall.

Film credits include appearances in “Cruel Intentions” and “Death Becomes Her.” On TV, she had numerous guest roles on such shows as "ER," "NYPD Blue," "The Drew Carey Show" and "Ally McBeal."
